Question about Cobra 18 WX ST 40-Channels Base CB Radio

1 Answer

I have a cobra 18 wx st cb. i just installed today. th problem i am having is that i can transmit very well after setting antenna with swr meter. i have great power out (max) but i can not get any feedback. the speaker works because i can pick up the weather station when i turn the volume down. i also notice the squelch does not emit static anyplace on the dial. any suggestion would be welcome. i have heard this could be a mic problem or antenna problem? even though i can transmit well and the swr is where it is suposed to be? i have a fiestic 4' antenna brand new. i used high end coax cable no pinches that i can tell i have checked. thanks for any help

Its a mic problem. With out a properly functioning mic the radio will not go into receive mode.

My cobra 18 wx st comes on and goes tru all channels but has no noise at all coming thru it. none of the signal strength lights come on or anything. its brand new.

Sounds like a antenna issue. Make sure coax is in good order.and antenna is connected properly. You might have to get a "swr" meter to put in line between radio and antenna to make sure antenna is "tuned" to were the radio is operating. Radio shack sells a ok low budget swr/power meter.

I have a cobra 29 wx nw st withwilson little wil entenna. I am having issues with a no swr reading on channel one even if I turn my swr cal all the way up. My 40 cal reads on the swr at .5 no matter how...

first of all you are going about it wrong. To set your SWR you check it on channels 1 , 19 , and 40. If you reading is higher on 1 than on 40 you have to shorten your antenna . if its higher on 40 than on 1 then you have to lengthen it. before you do any adjustments to it ,loosen the set screws and let the antenna fall to the bottom then bring it up 1/4 " and tighten the screws. You should also use an external SWR meter not the one on the radio. Thats good for making checks every once and a while. With the meter you key the mic and have the needle go to set then put it on for and key the mic to obtain you reading . Anything under a two is good .

Will not transmit.

if this radio is new, return it. Its garbage. Its the worst CB cobra ever made, and one of the most hated.

Still people should hear you. Have you calibrated your antenna for best SWR?

Look in your manual. Read the section on SWR. The antenna needs to be tuned, or your RF energy is not going out of the antenna, and being reflected back into the radio. That's bad.

And its "Coax" Not co-aux.

Cobra 18 wx st receives-wont transmit

Take the cover off, flip it over solder side up, check all solder joints for cracks, cold solder joints, check the safety diode where it comes in the radio, before I go further, can you pick up the weather channel?...Does the PA work?...need to check the pre-driver and finals, audio chip, hook up the power meter using a coax three foot jumper from the output from radio to the input of the watt meter, then the antenna, first check the SWR, on the scale on the meter to cal/swr mode, adjust it to spec, then while still keyed down turn the dial to SWR,if it is the safe range your ok,then turn the Dial to 10 or 20 watt scale and key the mic. Does it have any wattage? If not suspect the finals, they are located on the back rail, if it does have RF then its the audio chip, its located on the right side rail facing you, closest to you.remove it and replace it with same ....hope this helps....

Whinning noise when talking

The antenna could be at fault causing feedback into the radio. check with a good SWR meter to confirm this. Also check the power lead to the radio, try to connect directly to the battery.....

I can't xmit or receive on CB channels: Wx channels come in OK. I had a bad WalMart Special mobile antenna which shorted out because of corrosion. Now have a Diesel 15 inch mobile with tunable SWR tip....

If try another mic and see if problem is still
there then you have half of the problem, the
TX an RX all go through the mic if mic good
you will have to go inside of the unit.
Good Luck

Sounds to me like your finals in the rig have blown stopping you using the CB mode, Either that or you have a loose connection on the power output inside the radio.
