If the brush roller stalls when it comes into contact withthe carpet, it might be that the tensioner spring has broken off. This is adesign flaw in the Eureka4870. The symptoms are: 1) brush spins until it contacts the carpet then itstalls, 2) the brush lever for setting floor/carpet is loose and lacks a firmsetting, 3) vacuum no longer has the feel of being self-propelled on carpet. Itis not very easy to repair and I don't know if a replacement tensioner iscommercially available. To fix it yourself:

  1. Remove the base plate by the 3 Phillips screws.
  2. Remove the brush roller and belt.
  3. Remove the black accordion hose connecting the motor housing to the clear vertical riser on the side of the vacuum. Unscrew it from the riser. Then disconnect the accordion hose from its black connector that screwed into the riser. Then unscrew the Torx T-20 screw that holds the bottom of the hose into the motor base. Then draw the accordion hose out through the underside of the vacuum.
  4. From the underside, remove the 3 Torx T-20 screws that hold the red top cover in place. They are located between the brush roller and the two small height adjustment wheels. The middle screw holds the height adjustment knob. The other two straddle the height adjustment knob.
  5. Turn the vacuum upright and remove the red plastic cover. This is the most difficult step. Use a flat screwdriver to pry it loose in the hole where the accordion hose fed through. On the other side, where the foot operated upright release lever is, you will have to pry the red cover off. I broke the red plastic loop from here. But it still reseats OK.
  6. Still upright, remove the belt tensioner by the 5 Torx T-20 screws, including the one connecting to the slotted arm (it has a wide cylinder under the head). Before removing the piece, note that there appears to be another mounting hole like the four standard mounts. This is the anchor for the spring which applies tension to the tensioner. The other anchor point for the spring has probably broken off, and the spring might be dangling loosely or even missing.
  7. Remove the tensioner unit. Locate the other anchor point, which is probably a broken tab with a hole as the anchor point, broken through from the high tension of the spring. This is the aformentioned design flaw.
  8. Drill a new hole near the broken tab. I drilled two, at right angles to each other. Drill small holes so as to not weaken the remaining plastic. I drilled ~1 mm. Holes should be between the two anchor points so as to not make the spring stretch longer than the original. Plus, a longer anchor point will interfere with the butting of the plastic edge when in the stretched position. If the spring is already lost then use a replacement that is ~1 inch long (total length) with hooks at each end.
  9. Reassemble the tensioner device. Check the operation of the tensioner lever to ensure smooth, firm locking.
  10. Reassemble the red plastic cover (3 screws including the height adjustment knob).
  11. Reassemble the accordion hose, brush roller, belt, and base plate.
It now works as good as it every did. I will next be seeking a replacement tensioner device from Eureka or a shop, since Isuspect this modification may eventually weaken and break. The plastic springanchor points are definitely a poor design by Eureka.

Were you able to locate a replacement tensioner device? Our Vacuum is exhibiting the exact same symptoms and I'd like to fix it rather than just put a band-aid on the problem, if possible.

hey localsaint...I had the same problem and found the spring loose in the machine and I have no idea where it is supposed to attach...I am also a little unfamiliar with the name of some of the parts Can you provide any more detail

I never looked for the original replacement part. My described fix is still working fine after 3 years. Also, note that the flaw is a poor design with a spring anchor that is too weak and not up to the task (as opposed to a defect in manufacturing or assembly). So a roriginal replacement part will have the same weakness and risk.

Please be sure the roller turns freely. You might want to remove it and clean any debris found on or around it. At each end you will see a holder that keeps the roller brush in the frame of the vacuum. These parts should turn freely at the end of the roller brush. If they do not, add a bit of WD40 and turn by hand until they are moving without resistance. Might also be a good idea to put on new belts as well.

your problem seems to be the belt has snapped. Underneath the the hover there is a rubber belt that connects around the brush bar and around the motor, this belt will be broken. They can purchased from any hoover shop for a couple of pounds.

1. Check to see that the roller is installed properly (make sure it is not reversed and that it is all the way in).
2. Check to see if there is any play in the motor shaft and that the motor has not come loose.
3. Check for wear on the roller where the belt contacts the roller. If this is worn you may need a new roller.
4. If the belt is still contacting anything besides the motor pulley and the roller at this point, you still have a problem.

Hopefully this will help. Let us know how you make out and good luck!

I have a Hoover Turbo EmPower 4600 and the roller will not turn when we turn on the vacuum. The vacuum is fairly new, and hasn't seen too much use, but now the roller won't turn, so it's not picking...

The beater belt is broken. There are 4 phillips head screws on the outside (2 on top of the base on either side of the upright, and 2 on the front edge on the underside of the base near front edge). and 4 phillips head screws on the inside (holding the guard cover over the beater bar). The belt is about $3 (part number 38528040). Take out the beater bar and put the new belt around it. Then put the other end around the metal bar and stretch the belt taut as you position the beater bar back into its channel slots. Replace the guard and top cover and you should be good to go...

No suction in floor attachment *& brush not turning

Lay the machine on the floor with the front side down. Undo the 3 large plastic screws with a coin of some sort, then remove bottom panel. On the back of carrage where the roller bar sits their should be a clear plastic tube check this tube is free of dirt. Check around inside the carrage for hair string etc. Check belt for breaks and swelling in the rubber pull ont roller bar and check the end caps on the roller can spin freely. If not pull off the end caps these will be very tight and wash out all dirt and fluff, dry thourley and lubricate centre pin and end caps inside the roller with baby oil or wd-40. replace roller bar and belt, turn roller bar twice slowly to centralise the belt, replace bottom panel making sure that the clips on front are sitting in their holes. fastern the plastic screws and leave two hours before usage

Brush stops

This really sounds like a belt problem. Even if it looks OK, it may have stretched. New belts are cheap, and you'll need a new one eventually - if the old one turns out to be fine, you can always keep it as a spare. A second possibility is this: Many cleaners have a control which allows you to switch off the brush/beater bar so you can clean wooden floors without damaging them (for instance, mine has a pedal-operated bar which shunts the belt between two adjacent pulleys on the brush roller, one of which is properly keyed on, and the other of which is a loose fit allowing the roller to idle. If you have something like this on your cleaner, check you have the brushes switched on, and that the mechanism is working properly. A.
