This sounds like the sensor has failed.
Its a known problem with the 5700. You may have to look on the Nikon Europe website to confirm this (Nikon UK did not advertise it widely) and then ask Nikon to replace it. It was their policy to do this when mine failed, last year. Turnround was under two weeks.
Did you see if it is in manual focus mode? Try to switch to auto in the menu, or do a complete reset in the menu. Who knows what the last person was doing when you last used it, hehe
CCD problem if the pics are also with green ghost image if u see on PC then my friend see if that camera is on nikon service advisory otherwise they won't cover it after warranty if thats not in list if, luckily if on list then they will replace it free of charge try it on their website

Known defect in CCD. Nikon will fix this for you if you send it to them. I had the same problem: http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html http://nikoneurope-en.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nikoneurope_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=15856&p_created=1128531889&p_sid=Q6uBvZ1i&p_accessibility=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTY5JnBfcHJvZHM9MSwyJnBfY2F0cz0wJnBfcHY9Mi4yJnBfY3Y9JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=&p_topview=1
Contact Nikon on thier website, they will send you a reply and a link for return service and fix it for free. This website is no help, they want you to subscribe to a service before they reveal any info.
This is a defective CCD problem and will be repaired free of charge by Nikon even if the camera is out of it's original warranty. Check the link at this site: http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html
