Totally rethread your machine, pay attention that your thread is not tangled and your needle is fresh and the right size. You have a great machine, and if you need a manual go to Singerco.com and you can buy one for $15., well worth the money. Good luck and give your machine a little tlc with oil etc.

The needle is hitting the bobbin casing in the back. I have re-inserted the needle to make sure it is in properly. I have a Singer 248

Hello Beth
Check the following:
1. Make sure that the needle being used is the correct needle for this machine, refer to page 6 of manual.
2. Yes, insert all the way up ... with flat to the back.
3. Make sure that correct bobbin is being used for this machine. Bobbins not specific for this machine may/will cause problems.
4. Make sure that the bobbin is correctly inserted in the bobbin case. Refer to page 26 of manual.
A free downloadable manual is available at Singer Fashion Mate 248 Instructions Manual Page 31

How to fix E2 code on Singer Fashion Mate 5500 sewing machien?

I would take it back right now. Don't wait for another E2 error. I would take it back and get a different brand of machine.

Sorry... but Singer doesn't have the quality it once had.
