With XP, you right-click, click "Use as Background".
With Windows 7, right-click the page in an area where the preferred background is shown. Click "View page Info", click the "Media" button, select the Background image and it should show in the lower pane. If not, cursor up or down till the preferred image is shown., click "Save As..", change to the preferred folder and save the file with a preferred title. Withing Display Properties, locate and change the Background image to the saved file. Even finding the proper area to change the background image depends on your Windows version.
Open rear cover and check gray plastic film not torn or broken. If film broken printer requires the fuser replaced. This is not a user replaceable item as its quite a tear down to reach the fuser.
Image defects may also be caused by toner cartridge. Check toner cartridge for background issues. To do this print the printer's demo page and open door when paper is half in the printer. Remove the paper jam and check unfused image for defects. If defects occurs then replace toner.
Yes - surprisingly - we had the same problem, the gray stripe along the side of the page only showed up when the original was fed through the document feeder on top. Cleaned the small area of glass under the feeder repeatedly with no change to the resulting stripe, but then while cleaning the upper roller, above the area of glass where the scan lamp illuminates during the copying from the ADF, we found a small piece of paper adhering to the top roller in the paper path, cleaned it off, and no more band. We didn't see the bit of paper on the upper roller until we rolled it while cleaning. Still can't figure how that made a stripe....but hope this helps you.
Inspect imaging drums for any signs of leakage or excess toner that could be falling onto the print as it travels though the printer. Any leaking imaging drums should be replaced.
Verify environmental conditions. See article Dealing with humidity, humidifiers. If the environmental conditions are not within the specified range, the printer should be moved before trying to troubleshoot the cause to the background toner.
Determine if any of the imaging drums were exposed to light for an extended period of time (more than 10 minutes). If so, then Replace the imaging drum. (Xerox is not responsible for any imaging drums that have been damaged by over exposure to light.)
Additional Recommendations: Background toner may increase, if printing occurs at temperatures towards the higher end of the specified operating temperature range. For this reason, it is recommended that the printer be moved to another area if at all possible.
In addition, very smooth media types such as glossy; allow toner to more easily scatter about the page prior to becoming fused. Try using a less smooth media if at all possible.
