I think you have installed the HP full feature software in the computer.
You can check it, you need to click on Start button -> All Programs -> HP -> HP Director
please check if you are able to scan from HP Director (if yes then change the below settings so that you would be able to scan from the button on the unit)
open the HP Director -> click on "settings" -> scan settings -> scan to setup and you need to populate all the options which you see in the left panel. when you will populate all the options to right panel. Then click UPdate device or OK button. and then try to scan again from the button on the unit. It will work. If it does not then check for the DIM (Digital imaging monitor) icon in the system tray, it would have a green checkmark over it. if you do not see it then you have to start it from the below steps
please click on Start button -> My Computer -> C: Drive -> Program files -> HP -> Digital Imaging -> Bin -> hpqtra08.exe when you will double click on the file, you will see DIM icon in the system tray and you will be able to scan from the button on the unit.
