Audio I have a Gateway Laptop model number ML3109, and the little volume thing in the bottom right corner of the screen has a red x on it. I assumed I had the volume turned down, but when I try to turn it up it doesnt' work, and it says: No Audio Output Device is installed. I have had my computer for quite awhile now, and have listened to plenty of songs and movies so I know at one time it worked..can you help?!?!

Go to START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, ENTERTAINMENT, Volume control. With the volume control open, see if the volume is muted (Checkbox marked mute at bottom of Master volume) If it is checked, uncheck it, and you should have sound.

When i go to control sound says no audio device

Not a problem

Just download AND install the audio driver.

(Audio = Sound)

Driver: Small piece of software that allows the Operating System to communicate with a device

The device is the audio chipset.
The Windows O/S wasn't stated.

State the Model Number of the Gateway laptop in a Comment, and state what version of Windows operating system you are using.

I will come back, and guide you step by step in downloading, AND installing the audio driver.

[Model Number is on the Bottom of the laptop ]

The reason you see No Audio Device in Device Manager, is there is no driver to tell BIOS that audio chipset is there.

[WinXP:
Left-click on Start.
Right-click on My Computer.
Left-click on Properties at the bottom of the list.
In the System Properties window, left-click on the Hardware tab.
Left-click on Device Manager ]

We will also restore the Volume icon back in the taskbar.
(System taskbar is at the bottom of the screen. Time/date is in taskbar )

Please post back in a Comment.

I dont have sound on my laptop and i used to

Assuming this is a pc laptop: check the sound settings in Windows control panel. Also check the volume settings in the system tray (the speaker icon in the box at the bottom right corner of the screen. The volume may be turned down or muted.

There's something wrong with my speakers i cant hear anything

Are the speakers powered on? Make sure there is no power switch to turn them off or on. Then check to make sure the volume on the speakers is turned up if there is any. Next check to make sure the speakers are plugged into the green hole on your laptop, usually it will have a picture of headphones above it. Then make sure in the bottom right hand corner of your screen that the sound icon does not have a red X on it. If it does have a red X on it, simply click it and unmute it.

I formated my hp laptop and after i finished formating there was no sound on my laptop

Formatting your hard disk erases everything on the disk. Including drivers for hardware.

1. find out the make and model of your laptop.
2. Go to the manufacturer's website and look for "Technical support" or a similar section.
3. Generally within most "technical support" sections is an area for "Driver downloads." You will want to look for sound card drivers for your model of laptop.
4. Look for your model of laptop within the driver downloads section.
5. Download the package and run it's install program.

Alternatively, you may Google "Sound card drivers for [insert brand and model of laptop here]."

It will take a bit of effort using this the google method. The laptop manufacturer's website is usually the best place to look. (Note that in some cases, the manufacturer's website can identify the sound card in particular for your laptop model. You can then google the "driver for [insert soundcard brand and model number]". Or go to the soundcard manufacturer's website and download the driver for your brand and model of laptop from there.).

Alternative to the two above options (Assuming you have windows, and it is functioning after a reinstall), try the basics:
-Turn up the volume knob.
-Turn up the volume on the operating system through the sound control panel.
-If you have Windows, turn up the volume by right clicking the little speaker in the lower right corner of your screen. Be sure that there are NO mute options checked. Muting All turns off the volume for everything. Muting just the speaker, mutes the sound volume, but not everything else.

Most likely you need to replace your soundcard drivers, though. The process isn't difficult, but locating the right driver can have you pulling your hair out sometimes.
