Have you tried to use it on a different computer other than your own? Try different USB ports on your computer (if you have more than one). Reinstall the software on your computer. Don't install the upgrade. Also you may want to use Rhapsody or Windows Media Player to sync your songs onto the player.

I cannot connect my mp3 player to the pc

This model had a proprietary USB cable - it doesn't work with just any USB cable (also, it does not work with Windows Vista, or with Windows Media Player 10). Your computer has to be running Windows XP, and you have to be using Windows Media Player 10. here is an auction for the proprietary USB cable (may end at any time):

Gogear became dead suddenly

Battery is too low for player to charge. There is a firmware fix for this at

Fix cannot be applied until player is working again.

If you know someone who has the same player, put their battery in your unit to power up and apply firmware update to fix problem. Then swap batteries back again

Another way to get the player working is to remove the side panel to disconnect battery. Plug in the mains charger and reconnect the battery. You may need to do this several times before the player springs into life.
If this doesn't work try disconnecting the charger and battery alternately and wait 5 secs between attempts.

Not wanting me to deconect usb cable

Sounds like you'll need to reset the firmware. You can do this with a program called Philips GoGear HDD which will do this for you. It is available from Philp's website.

Problem With Turning On

Make sure you back up all songs on the GoGear before attempting this solution.

1) Back up all files on the GoGear
2) Open up Philips Device Manager (Start --> All Programs --> Philips)
3) Click on the Repair Tab, and look for a msg that says connect the player while holding the volume + button
4) Disconnect the GoGear from the computer and turn the GoGear off - hold in the volume + button and continue to hold it as you reconnect the GoGear to the computer; after holding the volume + button for up to 20 or 30 seconds, a window will open up saying that your device is being repaired (now you can let go of the volume + button); after the repair is successfully complete, your GoGear will be good as new

Now you can do the firmware upgrade that will prevent this problem from occuring in the future. Open up Philips Device Manager and click the Update tab. This problem was caused because most GoGear's were designed for Windows XP with Media Player 10 (which is no longer the latest standard).
