I have just bought a Nuvi 1240 sat nav. Never had a sat nav before My question hopefully is simple . It does not have a USD cable so where do I go to get map updates and how do I do it ?

Some Sat Navs can't convert, If it's bought & set to UK & Ireland maps, then you are stuck. 2nd thing , even if you can use Europe Maps on your Sat Nav, you still will be unable, to load USA maps.
Sat Nav not compatable, You will have to buy a NEW ONE.

Sometimes this problem is caused by a fault with the mini USB socket on the satnav. The lead appears to be pushed fully into the back of the satnav but it's not. Pushing it in further may solve the problem.

To increase the accuracy of your Garmin Nuvi 205W, I recommend you use Garmin's WebUpdater service to make sure you have the latest software on your device. Software improvements for acquiring satellite lock and location accuracy have been made.

I too just got mine from Santa... it's designed to operate while plugged into the lighter. It also charges the Li ion battery. If the Garmin screen comes on while you are using it I would suspect an error or what ever. (you DID move the little switch on the top left corner to unlock didn't you?) Just call their number 800 800-1020 and ask them. They were most helpful and were there well after the hours posted in the instruction book.
