I am also experiencing error 8. This a great coffee maker but after several years of use following the normal cleaning instructions just isn't enough. I can hear the machine straining after making a cup. I want to clean all parts inside, I got the front off and can lift the top a little. However there are what looks like 4 rivets on the back 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom. I cannot see how to get the top off and am afraid of breaking it.
Do you have any instructions on how to do this? Or can you tell me how to get the top off?
Not only was my machine straining, but it was leaking around the spout area. I managed to take it apart about as much as you did (didn't figure out the rear rivet area).
I was able to remove the silver logo plastic area in front, and that revealed two more screws which I undid and was then able to remove the spout and the the magnetic slide restraint. (cool design). I found the spout has a black plastic insert which needs to be removed by releasing the four catches and pulling up. There was all sorts of coffee gunk which plugged the spout so badly, it overflowed into the machine. I got that all cleaned up nicely, and the machine works great now!!
Hi Guys,
A few days ago I opened up my E8. It was easy... the "rivets" you are both concerened about are actually screws! They just look like rivets. Use a good pair of pliers or such and grab them and rotate counter clockwise. I am replacing mine with new screws (for easier work next time). I have 19, 700 brew cycles on mine

The E8 actually comes apart pretty easily. The slightly oval 'rivet' looking things are actually just screws. They can be easily removed with a vise-grip or pliers. You will also have to remove some torx screws, so you will need to have a torx wrench on hand (actually 2 different sizes).
The E8 error is simply coffee grounds clogging up the mechanism. Once you have the covers off, it is still a bit difficult to get at everything but it should be enough. Simply leaving it open and allowing it to dry out thouroughly seems to work in itself. I have actually just run a hairdryer in there to dry out the hard to reach grounds.
However, I recommend plugging the unit in and watching it run through some rinse cycles. Use a flashlight to see, and then follow through with a dry cloth and get as much gound coffee out as possible.
The other symptom which can easily be fixed when you have the machine apart is when water/coffee is pouring out above the intended release, i.e., not out of the spout. This happens just from being dirty and clogged and is super simple to fix and very satisfying! The front grey, plastic, sliding cover pops off and exposes all the residual coffee gunk that is giving you trouble. Just take it apart carefully and clean and your machine will be as good as new.
Once you take it apart once, you will see it is not that difficult and you'll be happy:) We open it up about every 6-8 months now just to clean it. Trust me, when you see what builds up in there, you will want to also.
Or you could send it away and spend $300-$500 for an upgrade. The worst part of that is being without your coffee machine for a few weeks.
OF COURSE....be very careful when it is plugged in. Electricity kills :)
I compare all of this in difficulty to......well, my wife can do it. So can my 10 yr old son. Probably if you can put together a piece of IKEA furniture and you know what a torx is, you can do this.
