Birds will instinctively know when to fly south, however you are correct in assuming that they may stick around longer if a food source is provided. This could be dangerous for some species of birds. The general rule of thumb for your area is that whenever the highest temperature of the day is less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit you should take down the bird feeder.

Hello,

The flight of hummingbirds is amazing to watch. They are able to fly up, down, forward, backward and sideways. They can stop in midair. Hummingbirds are famous for their aerial display. Some displays are courtship displays; other displays are aggressive. Hummingbirds fly great distances when they are migrating.
The average years is 3 to 5 years.

Take care.

How hi should a humming bird feeder be?

Hi Andrew.
Hang the feeder approximately 5 feet above the ground, Make sure there is no foliage underneath that would encourage unwelcome guests, like mice, squirrels and even cats, to feed on the sugar water. If you wish to hang multiple hummingbird feeders, locate the feeders at least 10 to 12 feet apart.2.

How do hummingbirds fly backwards

A hummingbird can rotate each of its wings in a circle, allowing them to be the only bird which can fly forwards, backwards, up, down, sideways or sit in sheer space. To hover, hummingbirds move their wings forward and backward in a repeated figure eight, much like the arms of a swimmer treading water.

How old can a hummingbird be?

Most species live, on average 5 years or so. It does of course depend on several environmental factors like food sources and weather. Some can live a couple of years longer or more and some only live 3 or 4 years.

When to feed hummingbirds in New Hampshire

I lived in NH & VT for 20yrs, and only fed them in Spring & Summer. They have a reeeally long flight south in the Fall, so continuing to feed them is not beneficial to them. We can help encourage them to get on their way before the temps drop. And they have little to no body fat to protect them from the cold. I feed them 1 part sugar mixed with 4 parts water. Also, cleaning the sticky feeder with hot water, weekly, is helpful. Happy birding!

I feed them till they don't come around any more. Usually in the late fall. I live in southern Ontario Canada. Mine quit showing up when my red Cana Lilies died after first frost.
