Hi, blinking light may indicate activity to or from hard disk and computer, maybe the disk partition was damaged or lost due to incorrect ejection or a virus, you could use a free partition recovery software to try to fix it, for example EaseUs.

SOURCE: usb port on lacie has become detached and fallen inside

This procedure is to extract the drive from the case..

1. The case is useless, dispose of it when you've extracted the drive. Attempting to reuse is pointless and could only cause more damage.

2. Make sure you disconnect ALL cables to the drive before you begin this.

3. You will need to be gentle as and shock or impact to the hard drive may render it useless, which would be unfortunate, considering it sounds as if the case is the issue, not the drive.

4. When choosing a new enclosure, go aluminum, and with no internal fan or psu. This just makes the environment hot and severe.

They cost slightly more than what is on the consumer market, but i use and recommend

Wiebetech TT4 or TTXE models, depending on whether the drive is PATA or SATA.

So to answer your question...

Yes, with a flat head screwdriver ( like a jeweler's ) and the drive on a book on its topside down. You can gently pry the bottom housing off about and inch from each corner. Upon prying up, you'l see the little slotted hole. There should be 4 metal fingers on both sides of the drive, screw in 2 on each side. Then remove the plastic contact guards, and gently pull up at the led light ( the power cable for the light should be running down the middle and is usually red or green. Once youve removed that, gentley put your hand on the drive, and with your other hand, flip the entire enclosure over. The drive should lightly fall out of the enclosure and into your hand......minimizing shock or movment of the drive, these things should be handled like babies..never shake. From here grasp the drive itself, and you will notice 2 cables binding the drive to the enclosure. The first is the data cable know as IDE or PATA and looks like a ribbon- more often yellow- second is the power cable known as MOLEX. The molex cable should be 4 wires..2 black, 1 yellow, 1 red. Ofcourse, be gentle when removing both Cables, as to not exert to much force so that it goes flying when its released. Once youve separated the 2, youll see that case for all its glory, or not. It's really a soda can with the cheapest components internally. Once the weight of the drive is out, there nothing to the box.

If you have any hesitation or addition questions before you begin, please ask here.

SOURCE: LaCie Big Disk Extreme 1TB Hard Drive - continuous beep, no power

Hi, Lacie isn't very forthcoming with beep codes but it definitely means one of the two. You can try moving the hard drive into a new enclosure, if it works it was the enclosure, if not the HDD. Hate to say it but warranty on these drives is a moot point the moment unique data is stored on them as you can't even diagnose the problem properly without voiding it and no drive manufacturer will waranty data. If you have no unique data and it's under warranty, send it back. If you have unique data on it that you value, take it to a local computer store and have them move the drive to a new external enclosure and test it. If it works, you're done. If it doesn't, you've confirmed that the HDD is faulty and you will need the help of a data recovery Pro. If the latter is the case, reply by commenting here with your location (country, state city) and I'll recommend a closeby facility for you. Chris

SOURCE: Lights on nobody home

Well if it is less than 2 or 3 years old you could contact them to attempt a sawp out of the drive. Over that - replace the unit. IF you do - you might want to consider a duel disk enclosure so if a drive dies, your data does not. you can build one yourself (1 TB duel drives, Raid 1) for a total of 252 bucks, with good drives (Seagate - Barracuda) Yes I swear by the Seagate Drive. For off teh shelf they have worked very well in every application I have deployed them.

I've been burned by too many single drive failures - even when I have the data backed up it is still a royal pain.

I have a Lacie 1TB Big Disk Extreme. It has recently developed a loud regular whirring noise, that goes on and off every few seconds. What should I do? Thanks! Adrian

The irregular clicking or chunking sound usually indicates that your hard drive is suffering from physical damage. immediately backup your data, your hard disk will die soon.

This problem can be caused by the following:

  • Head Crash
  • Bad Sectors
  • Mechanical Faults

If your hard disk is under warranty then you contact your manufacturer.
Hard disk drive occasionally produces a whirring sound when it searches for a file which is heavily fragmented. This is caused by the spinning platters as the read-write heads zoom back and forth to access the sectors where the data is stored. It is important to distinguish the whirling sound from the clicking sound. This whirring sound can be reduced by periodically defragmenting your hard drive. Defragmenting reorganizes the scattered data on the hard drive to make files and programs run faster. It relocates the commonly accessed files to the beginning of the hard disk where data can load at a faster rate.

My Itb lacie firewire usb2 doesn't powerup. no blue light. the adapter green light keep blinking when connected to the drive, but if you un plug it from the drive the adapter light stays without blinking.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Help is it possibol to upgrade lacie big disk extreme 500gb to 1tb or 2tb. thanks. FC

Maybe. If the current disk-drive has an IDE interface, then your 500GB disk-drive already is the largest IDE disk-drive ever produced. Or, if the current disk-drive has a SATA interface, then the sky (or the thickness of your wallet) is the limit.

Trouble seeing my lacie drive possible mounting issue

Not sure if this is the exact same issue, but I couldn't get the drive to mount with different connections, etc. The problem turned out to be the power adapter. If you've got the same kind of adapter on another drive, switch it out and see if your drive shows up. Good luck.
