SOURCE: kenmore frig ice machine doesn't make cube ice
Normally, the ice "cubes" are crescent shaped. The most likely cause for "crushed" ice is that the ice maker isn't getting enough water on its refill cycle after ejecting the tray. Becuase there isn't enough water, the ice looks crushed...it's actually shattered.
Check the water inlet and chute to the ice maker. Sometimes they freeze and have to be manually defrosted. A hair dryer will do the trick. Also check the water chute and be sure it isn't partially frozen.
Start there...if no luck you could also have a failing water filter or sticky water solenoid valve.
SOURCE: ice dispensor only dispensing crushed ice - not cubed
The spring coming off the rod will also cause this problem, also the bypass flap may be stuck open, always check the simple things first, hope this helps.
SOURCE: only puts out crushed ice
Pull out the ice bin and set aside. On the back wall of the freezer where the auger drive coupling is, to the right and down below the locator pin, is a square opening....make sure that the actuator is in the down position. if stuck in up position, it will always crush the ice. We have had the same problem with our frigidaire. The actuator is connected to the "crushed ice" solenoid.
