You have to hold down the top and bottom buttons at the same time for around 10-15 seconds and it will eventually display an unlock icon and you are back in business..

Had to try it twice consequtevly.
I.e. first time the screen went all grey, second time after about 5 seconds the "unlock" symbol appeared :)

    Many Thanks!!

  • luis mendez May 19, 2011

Yessss it works. but I had to press the top and bottom buttons at the sime time for around 30 seconds, then appears a lock open (unlocked). After that I had to turn off and turn on the monitor and all it was ok

  • czill May 20, 2014

I had to hold the menu button (just above the power button) for 30 seconds. This only worked when the lock symbol stayed on the screen while I held the button down. If the lock symbol went away it would not unlock the monitor.

This would only work when I had a computer connected to the display. If the computer is showing no VGA cable or similar it didn't work. After plugging in a computer the above solution worked.

thank you very much for the solution. Dell couldn't tell me how to fix it

    2009 model. 12 years old
most monitors made have OSD lock.

the manaul says to reset to factory settings
then fails to tell how, a Dell ERROR seen in there manual.
this monitor has advance eDID controls
on my desktop w10 , i have remote monitor control.
    and it has reset command.
    from PC to monitor.
dell as assessment management software too
    that does that step.reset
the sale add from dell states

Supports remote asset management when used with Dell PCs in a network managed by Dell Client Manager.• Enables remote access to EDID information like model name, serial number, year of manufacture, etc.,especially useful for efficient asset-tracking & monitoring across the network• Enables remote control of brightness, contrast, power-off and restoring of various factory default settings

    bingo that.

    now mine.

    I run clickmonitorDDC 7.2
    https://m.majorgeeks.com/mg/getmirror/cl...

    run that and click reset
    https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us...

most monitors just hold oSD menu button in for 15seonds and release.
this monitor has 2 button trick above
    unique to dell

now you have 2nd way with clickmonitor.

  • Anonymous Apr 10, 2021

if you unplug the monitor (video cable)
    it runs self tests.
or goes to sleep. by law. Energy star

dell did not tell you that anon #2
that was a customer response only !
Del_chris M is the master there.
read his post. or ask him.
the remote software (I have 3 apps now)
does that via the Edid comm chip
it will reset any modern monitor even yours. even my old LG.

I have a dell monitor. i was trying to hook up, but pressed wrong button now its locked . how do i unlock it

It depends on the model of your monitor. Monitors like the Dell E228WFP, P2210 and 1701FP can be unlocked by holding the MENU or SETTINGS button for 15 seconds.

Newer versions like programmable LCD's like the 2412... have four programmable buttons. The answer is to press and hold the BOTTOM button (not the power button) for 15 seconds.

I hope this answers your question.

How do I get P2210 monitor to work with USB with Dell Inspiron 15R that doesn't have a VGA port

The Inspiron 15R should have an HDMI port. You should be able to connect the HDMI to the DVI-D port on the P2210 with a cable like this: http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=102&cp_id=10231&cs_id=1023104&p_id=2661&seq=1&format=2 . Alternatively, you can get an HDMI to Display Port adapter. Connect either cable with the notebook and monitor both off. Then turn on the monitor before turning on the computer. Pressing F1 should send the signal to the monitor. However, if you right click on the desktop (anywhere there isn't a program or icon), you should see some links for DIsplay options. You can use those to select the monitor resolution and whether to use both screens (extended or mirrored) or one at a time.

The most expensive option would be a USB to video adapter, see http://www.startech.com/AV/USB-Video-Adapters/ , or docking station. These come with VGA or other video output ports depending on the model. The USB ports on the monitor are just an integrated hub to plug in an external devices. It doesn't communicate to the display.

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(The DVI to HDMI cable doesn't supply audio but that doesn't matter in this case. However, you may need to go into the Manage Audio devices control panel and disable sound on the HDMI port. Open the Control Panel (Windows + X in Windows 8 or from the Start Menu with Windows 7). Go to Hardware and Sound and then look for Manage Audio Devices under Sound. In the playback tab, adjust the default audio device by right-clicking on the appropriate device. Then click Apply.)
