Options:
1: the cartridges have run out. They are quite small and will give 40 to 50 pages of text or 10 to 15 pages with colour. You might be lucky to get a couple of photos of a full set of cartridges. Take them out and feel the weight - if they feel really light they will be empty.
2: the print head has dried out. Take it out of the printer, wash it in warm water (just water) and dry it with a paper kitchen towel. Replace it and try again.
3: it is possible that the print head is faulty, but there are usually lots of flashing lights to indicate a problem and the machine would not be feeding paper.
Hammer sticking and typing incorrect letters (and or skipping letters): 1) make sure daisy wheel installed correctly. 2) hold down CODE key & Q (RESET) to reset wheel...if still not corrected 3) WD40 the hammer at the base & joints where moving parts are, keep typing until oil seeps in (this last one fixed it for me)
Typing light and inconsistant-top part of letter okay but bottom too light or not there: to left of hammer (at base) are 2 screws, I losened them and adjusted hammer to different forward and backward spots..finally found the ideal location where full letter printed and had the correct force it needed to print correctly.
Perhaps you need to adjust the printer settings in your computer?
Pay special attention to the print quality settings (if Draft mode is default, then you'll get weak colors), and to the paper (media) type - it won't let you print photo quality printouts on plain paper, as normal paper cannot accept too much ink (it would get soaked and colors would blend ugly).
If you put in high quality, expensive photo paper, and in the settings the paper would be set to "plain paper" - you'll get washed out colors on the printout, because the print driver in your system thinks that the paper is ordinary and limits the amount of ink used.

1 Resolution may vary based on printer driver setting. Color
ink droplets can be placed with a horizontal pitch of 1/4800 inch at
minimum. 2 PPM print speeds are based on the highest speed
printer driver mode. Photo print speeds are based on the default mode
driver setting using Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy paper. Print speeds
will vary depending on system configuration, interface, software,
document complexity, print mode, types of paper used and page coverage.
CPM copy speeds based on fast mode setting using plain paper. Copy
speeds may vary based on document complexity, copy mode, page coverage
and number of copies. 3 USB 2.0 Hi-Speed requires Windows
XP, 2000 or Mac OS X operating systems. For Windows 98, Me and Mac OS X
v.10.2 to 10.2.6 operating systems, the printer will operate at USB 1.1
specifications.
I don't understand the comment that your canon will not print on any type of photo paper. I own the same printer. I have found that the canon i9900 does not print well at all on generic photo papers, it does poorly on Kodak photo papers, good on HP and excellent on Epson. Are you selecting Preferences/media type, then photo paper, paper pro, paper glossy or matte. What version is your driver. I updated mine last year and it did not work, I still use the original from the install disk, which I have. [email protected]
double check ALL the print settings (i.e. paper type, document type, etc). Depending on which option it is even one "box" or "setting" being changed can alter your printers function. Try looking for options that will auto detect the type of document you are printing (ie, color, with pic, plain, etc).
Best results will be if the paper you are using is designed for use in this machine and you print with the driver knowing paper type and using a direct flat paper path
Use The bypass tray (and you can also use face up delivery tray ) and make sure you tell printer what paper type it is using ie control panel, printers, preferences, paper type set to photo/gloosy or even card stock if it is thick.
Ensure feed rollers are clean, and paper is good quality
