Hello Twalker

It will not be necessary to download the software again. You only need a flash/pen drive with more than enough free space to accommodate the contents of the disc.

Insert the disc into your computer and also insert the flash drive.

Now , go to my computer and right click on the cd.
Select the copy option.

I have a purchased fix-it - 56d8a18.jpg

Then , go to your flash drive and right click on a free space and select paste.

This will now copy the contents of the disc onto the flash drive in a folder names after the cd.

Not simply remove the flash drive , put it in your laptop and go to the correct folder. Then open the folder and look for a file names Autorun which will normally have a little setup icon. This will start the setup.

If you can't find the autorun file , there should be a setup file which you can run and it will also install the software.

You will be able to use you serial as normal but please be advised that unless the product is licensed for more than two computers , this process is technically illegal.

Please let me know if you need some more help or info.

Kind Regards
StephanSA

Program

Fix-It Utilities is a program by Avanquest that is marketed as an all-around computer protection and enhancement tool.
Fix-It Utilities scans your computer for potential problems and fixes them automatically. Additionally, it monitors your computer in real time to alert you about hardware and software issues before they can cripple your computer.
If you are looking for a utility to handle your computer maintenance for you, Fix-It Utilities is one program that you might consider selecting.

Double-click the downloaded program file if you purchased the digital version of Fix-It Utilities directly from Avanquest.
If you purchased the boxed retail edition, insert the installation disc and allow a moment for the Fix-It Utilities installation program to load.
Click "Next" when the Fix-It Utilities Installation Wizard appears.
Read the terms of the Avanquest license agreement carefully before continuing.
If you are willing to abide by the terms, click the "Accept" button to continue.
Enter the name that you would like to register Fix-It Utilities under, and then type your 24-character product key exactly as it is shown in the product packaging or the email sent by Avanquest when you purchased Fix-It Utilities online.
Click "Next."
Select the radio button labeled "Complete" to install all of the features of Fix-It Utilities, and then click "Next" twice.
The installation utility begins copying the files for Fix-It Utilities to the hard drive.
When this process is complete, the installation utility displays a screen with four check boxes.
Use the four check boxes on the screen to indicate whether you would like Fix-It Utilities to check for and install updates automatically, whether you would like the program to make snapshots of your system for recovery in the event of a problem, whether you would like the program to monitor your computer for malware and viruses and whether you would like the program to scan your email.
Click "Next," and then click "OK" and "Finish."
Fix-It Utilities is installed.
If you used the check box to configure Fix-It Utilities to check for updates automatically, the program begins scanning the Internet for updates immediately.

My macbook pro desktop icons are gone! and the spinning wheel keeps going. Any ideas

Your hard drive might be failing.
If you have the original install discs that came with your computer, insert disc 1 into your computer. Then turn off your computer and then turn it back on again while holding down the Option (alt) key and double click on the CD icon that pops up. Then when the computer boots from the DVD, click on Utilities and the open up the Disk Utility application. Run "Repair Disk" with your internal hard-drive selected. If this program cannot fix your problem, you may need to invest in purchasing a new hard drive and replacing the one in your computer.

Your computer is still protected by the manufacturer's warranty,
i.e., they will repair anything (including your disk-drive) at their cost.
Take it back to where you purchased it, and file a warranty-claim.

Hitachi ext. drive formatted for a PC, but now I want to read it

you need to reformat the drive for MAC...

Use Disk Utility To completely erase a Macintosh hard drive that runs OS X 10.3.x or above—not just individual files on the drive—you can use the Disk Utility that is built into the Macintosh operating system.

How to Use Disk Utility to Erase a Macintosh Hard Drive (OS X 10.3.x or 10.4.x)
  1. You must reboot your computer using the OS X system CD that came with your Macintosh. To do so, follow these steps:
  • Insert the CD into the CD drive.
  • Hold down the C key during the startup process.
  1. Select your preferred language. You will then see the Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window.
  2. From the Installer Menu Bar, click Open Disk Utility. You will then see the Disk Utility window.
  3. In the left pane of the Disk Utility window, click the drive you want to erase.
  4. In the right pane of the Disk Utility window, click the Erase tab.
  5. From the Volume Format drop-down menu, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
  6. In the Name field, highlight the existing text and type the name the hard drive is to be called after it's formatted.
  7. NOTE: If you ever plan to connect another computer running OS 9 to this hard drive, you'll want to install the Mac OS 9 disk driver, so that this disk will be visible from an OS 9-booted computer. If you don't know if you will do this in the future, it's best to install these drivers.
  8. The following are the available security options:
  • Don't Erase Data—This option only rewrites the headers on the disk. Files can be recovered by forensics, disk utilities, and other advanced recovery software.
  • Zero Out Data—There are forensics utilities that, albeit expensive and time consuming, can retrieve zeroed-out data.
  • 7-Pass Erase—This is considered sufficient by government standards to erase data from a disk. It writes random data over the disk seven times. It may take several hours or more to complete this process.
  • 35-Pass Erase—This makes it absolutely impossible to regain any data off the drive. This option takes an extremely long time, possibly more than one day.
  1. Click the radio button in front of 7-Pass Erase (recommended by UD).
  2. Click OK.
  3. Click Erase.
  4. Confirm you want to erase. The program will unmount the volume, partition the drive, and rename the volume to the name you typed in step #7 above.

If you registered the software after purchase the manafacturer may have this information on file, and they maybe able to provide it to you. Otherwise you may have to purchase a new serial key/ software for them.

My MacBook Pro goes to the grey screen with the

Most likely, you are looking at a corrupt installation of the OS, or a failing hard drive... most likely the latter, unfortunately. Laptop hard drives only seem to last a couple years now, 3-4 if you're really lucky. I would suggest popping in the System Restore Disc (that came with the computer originally) or the OS install disc (in case it has a new version installed than it came with originally) and go to Tools->Disk Utility, and tell it to "repair permissions" and "repair disk", and see if that resolves it. If it happens to, I suggest backing up your data ASAP just in case. More info can be found here on using Disk Utility.

I'd like you to get into your bios. At the main bios window make sure your bios is seeing the hard drive correctly (model number). Also check that your cdrom is listed. While in the Bios go to boot & correct the boot order. 1st should be cdrom, 2nd should be your new Hitachi.
You mentioned you connected it to a PC. Than you installed WinXP & everything went fine. Disk read error means your laptop does not like the FAT. When you bought the Hitachi did you get a disk utility? If not download it from the link provided here & test your drive. Use the disk utility to set up your new drive & format
it with the utility. Try again to boot to your cdrom & install WinXP. If your XP does not include SP1 or SP2 your drive may show a smaller size.

Good luck, I hope the disk utility fixs the problem.
