I have the F2 error code and bought the switch membrane. Now I have the panel off but it appears the staneless steel cover is glued to the plastic inner panel and I did not want to pry it off and damage it. How do I get the outside steel panel off so I can replace the membrane?

It would help for me to know your model number, but I'll tell you what I know generally.

Often the metal cover is held in place on the plastic control panel frame by several bent metal tabs which are visible from the rear side of the plastic frame.

You may have to remove your circuit board from the frame to see them and bend them straight so the metal cover can be removed.

The drawing below should clarify this.

Error code F2

Per the tech sheets (page 8), "F2" error code means "Keyboard failure". Recommended by the manufacturer to replace the touch panel first and, if it would not solve the problem, then the control board has to be replaced too. Not the best recommendation but we have to follow it.

- The part number for the touch panel (aka a membrane switch) is AP3130765

- The part number for the control board AP3130764

Whirlpool mircowave model MH3184XP the display reads F2

There is a problem with the control pad. The membrane, or surface, of the pad may be broken or damaged somewhere, resulting in the F2 error code. This is common for Whirlpool microwaves.

Press "Stop/Cancel" twice and select a new cook program. Press "Start" to begin.

If the error code persists, press "Stop/Cancel" again and unplug the microwave. Wait several minutes and plug it in. If the F2 code appears again, it requires repair.

Replacement membranes can be found online

but the internals of a microwave are dangerous, having high voltages even when unplugged. With the cost of parts and labour from a service tech, you may be best buying a new oven.

Error code F2

The error code "F2" that appears on your KitchenAid microwave refers to a keyboard failure/short on the front button panel or loose keypad connector

Attempt the following to clear error:
Check keypad connector for firm connection.
Press "Cancel" after the error code is noted, if error code returns after 60 seconds, replace keypad ( also called touch pad or membrane switch ).

F2 Error

F2 is a membrane switch error.

1. Unplug microwave oven or disconnect power.
2. Replace membrane switch.
3. If problem persists, replace electronic control.
4. Replace all parts and panels before operating.
5. Plug in microwave oven or reconnect power.

The answer to your question is YES. I would venture to say the PART is - but not the labor. You would need to read your warranty to confirm.

My microwave start button doesn't push in to start my microwave

The keypad is a thin plastic membrane type that is glued to the plastic control panel frame.

It's most likely that the keypad is worn out or possibly you have a flaky door switch.

We have full details, critical safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as door switch testing info) at our site. You'll find a link to our site in our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can usually order Samsung parts (either the keypad / membrane switch or control panel with keypad) from http://www.samsungparts.com but that model number is not showing up, so you may have to call or e-mail them through their site.

I'd say you have a contaminated or failing keypad or possibly residue on the boar dor where the keypad connects to the board.

Is it possible that some spray cleaner got into the controls?

I always recommend that users instead spray cleaner on a soft cloth then wipe the control panel.

Also, I always recommend non-ammonia cleaners since ammonia can crack and damage plastic.

Otherwise, the spray can get into the controls and lock it up or make it act odd.

If it does not dry out over time, it may need to be manually dried or blown out.

The keypad may be damaged or worn out, or control unit may be damaged.
