I just replaced the starter on my 2001 F 150 and had to use a 13 mm socket with a swivel and 3 long extensions. I reached the top and side bolts by going through the wheel well. You have to stick your head in over the tire to see the top bolt, but it was pretty easy to reach it with this combination. The side bolt I could either reach it from under the truck or through the wheel well, through the wheel well seemed easier using the swivel and extensions

Starter replacement on f150 4.6

Ford engineers obviously got a big laugh when they designed this one. The third bolt is not visible, but it is right at the top of the bolt "circle", the bottom two are visible and fairly accessible. If you have small hands, you might be able to reach a finger way up there and feel it. Because of the engine mount, you have to have a socket and extension that is exactly the right length, leaving just enough room between the end of the starter and the engine mount to attach a ratchet. Getting the socket on the bolt head is sort of a stab in the dark; push the socket and extension toward where you think the bolt is, and sometimes you can feel the socket engage the bolt head. The only other option might be to remove the exhaust manifold so you can see the bolt, but you are likely to break off at least one manifold bolt/stud, so that would be a last resort for me. Once the top starter bolt is loosened, you might have better luck finishing the removal with 1/4 inch drive tools as they take up less space.

How many bolts hold the starter in place on a 1999 ford f150 4.6L ? I can clearly see 2, is there a third hiding somewhere? What size socket do I need to use to remove the bolts?

Hello mike coughli: My name is Roger and I will help you. There are 3 bolts in the starter. The top is just over the top of the solenoid on the back side. Reach over the top with your fingers and you should feel it. You will need an extension long enough to allow you to work from the end os the starter. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

How to remove starter on 1997 ford f150

Welcome to Fixya

Here's the procedure:

  • 1Raise the front end of the F150 off the ground with the floor jack. Place the two jack stands under the front portion of the F150's frame and then lower the truck onto the jack stands.

  • 2

Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable end from the battery using the battery wrench. Push the cable off to the side where it can't accidentally contact the battery during the repair process.

  • 3

Climb under the front passenger side of the F150 with the socket set. Locate the starter, which bolts to the side of the engine, where the transmission bell housing meets the back side of the engine block.

  • 4

Unbolt the starter ground wire and wiring harness using the socket set. Move the wires aside.

  • 5

Hold the body of the starter with one hand while removing the two starter mounting bolts with the other, using a socket set to do so. Never let the weight of the starter bear down on the loose bolts.

  • 6

Pull the starter out by hand once you have removed both of the mounting bolts. Compare the old starter to your replacement, making sure they are physically identical before proceeding with the installation of the replacement unit.

  • 7

Hold the replacement starter in position and thread the mounting bolts through the starter flange and into their mounts. Tighten them down with the socket set. Remember to never let the weight of the starter hang on the loose bolts.

  • 8

Attach the ground wire and starter wiring harness in reverse of disconnection.

  • 9

Lower the F150 off the jack stands with the floor jack and then reconnect the negative battery cable using the battery wrench.

Can't reach bolts on starter tried using ratchet and extension but it's to big i can't use it. I have the Ford F150 1997

I'm guessing it has the 4.6 motor they are very tough to get to
one method is move exhaust out of the way the problem with that is the exhaust manifold bolt will strip or is rusted. and this is a bigger problem to deal with.
The best way i found is soak it with pb blaster and use a 1/4 in short to med extension and and the same with sockets until you find the right combination using a swivel head socket. the hardest is the top

    Starter removal on a 1997 ford f-150

Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Disconnect the wires on the starter. Remove the 3 bolts securing the starter. Most likely you will need a few extensions and wobble sockets to get your ratchet out near the fan or front of the wheel well to get the top 2 bolts out.

Can't get the starter out of a 1991 Nissan pickup.

The second bolt is hidden way up and tucked in near the solenoid. You need to setup a ratchet with extensions/socket (14mm) combination that is just a little longer than the starter motor. If you just can't picture where the bolt is, then go down to the parts store and look at/purchase the replacement starter to see how it mounts up.
There are two bolts for the starter mount and one nut for the main starter power lead. There is one plug for the starter key switch.
Disconnect plug. Loosen lower bolt. Remover upper bolt. Remove lower bolt. Twist starter so you can remove main power cable nut (be sure to have disconnected the battery first!) Pull starter.
