My Maytag refrigerator is freezing my fresh produce...it is a bottom freezer with in-door ice/water dispenser...how do I solve this?

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

There could be several areas that would effect your water dispenser not working:

1.) When you depress the water dispenser do you hear a 'Click'? If not you have a bad water dispenser contact switch.
I would send you a diagram but I do not have your model number.

2.) In the lower back of your fresh food section is your water dispenser water tank. At times this can freeze near the freezer section. Look in the lower corner of the freezer & your fresh food section for ice build-up.

3.) You could have a bad water filter. This does happen often. Remove the water filter and test you water dispenser.

4.) Do you have water leaking out of the bottom of your dispenser door? If so you have a split in the tubing in your water dispenser door.

5.) Is your ice maker working? Often the water valve to your refrigerator becomes plugged up and you do not get sufficient water pressure 60 PSI to operate your water dispenser solenoid valve.

Is the freezer freezing the contents good?

some times our equipment need rest !!! remove your food , unplug for at least two days, clean inside.after two days plug back

we can not get water or ice out of the dispenser

start by checking the solenoid that supplies the dispenser to see if it is burned out. It is usually located in the back lower part of frig where the water inlet line hooks to. There are usually 2 solenoids.... the ice maker and the dispenser. Unplug the frig before testing these. The resistance across the ice maker and dispenser are usually the same. If the dispenser solenoid is "open" on the ohm meter then the whole water supply valve needs replaced. Another problem with some units where the dispenser is on the FREEZER side...the lines behind the door will freeze.

There is a pan and drain hose under the freezer coil that is there to catch any water when the freezer goes into defrost. I feel strongly that is where you will find your leak.

Any time moisture freezes to something in the freezer it is two possible reasons that are most likely. The defrost system is defective, blocked or there is outside air being drawn into the freezer from a faulty seal or the ice maker door at the dispenser is sticking open. Keep an eye on these things and freezer temperatures and fresh food temperatures. Your refrigerator is complex and I have the service manual and willing to help you solve this. Welcome to the computer world. When depressed, the paddle actuates a switch attached to the bracket above. The switch sends a low voltage signal to a small circuit board mouted right behind the display. A computer chip on that small board communicates with another chip on the main control board mounted in the rear wall. Your situation could be a bad actuator switch, a broken paddle tab, possibly a bad door switch (the fresh food doors must be closed to dispense), or a bad electronic control.

4) old water filter (clogged)
