I can no longer program macros. I can use other remotes to "teach" single commands to the System Control buttons—or to other button assigned to a macro. Until now, I’ve also been able to reprogram series of commands. This has to be my fault. Everything else is working fine. All 12 of my RM-VL900s wouldn’t go bad at the same time. To test the macro function in its simplest form, I've reset one RM-VL900 to its factory default settings and then tried to program this simple macro: TV "ON," followed by TV "TV/VIDEO. It doesn't matter that I don't have a Sony TV set. I just want to see the TV Component button flash once for "ON" and again for "TV/VIDEO"—as I’ve always been able to get the thing to do. I bet many people who have used RM-VL900s for more than a few functions have discovered the same thing I did first time I programmed mine. You have to finesse some programming steps. For example, when deleting a single button assigned to a given component, it may not work to follow the prescribed procedure: 1)set all the component buttons flashing and then 2)press the component button while (taking care to hold it pressed) also 3)press the button to be erased. You may have to press and hold the component button and almost immediately release both buttons—as quickly and simultaneously as possible. Carrying out the same sequence at a normal pace may not work, even if you’re as careful as possible and repeat the procedure numerous times. I’ve discovered other necessary tricks, variations in timing and sequence that work when the prescribed steps fail. Trying such variations, I was just now able to program a macro for one TV set on one remote. Such variations, sadly, were apparently so subtle that I can’t reproduce them on other remotes for other TVs. It doesn’t mean I’m not missing something simple just because I’ve learned some work-arounds, almost memorized the manual, and read everything I can find on the Web about programming the RM-VL900. In the past it has been easy to program series of commands, but I need help now.

To teach commands for your Device that did not work properly in normal mode:
1. Click the Devices button on your home page. 2. Select the Device you wish to learn commands to. 3. Select Learn Infrared Commands. 4. Click Custom. The page will reload. 5. Select the boxes for commands you would like to teach, and click Learn Selected as Raw.
NOTE: When teaching each command, press the button on the original remote for as long as required to control the device. The commands will be learned with the exact format that is sent by the original remote.
If you have any trouble teaching the commands in RAW, complete the following steps:
1. Verify you are pointing the original remote at bottom end of your remote, and are holding the remotes 2-4 inches apart. 2. Minimize the amount of light that could interfere with the learning process by covering the distance between the remotes. Block out sunlight, or turn off the lights. 3. Check that you have installed new batteries in the original remote you are trying to use to learn commands. If the batteries are low, the signal coming from your original remote may be too weak for the remote to detect. 4. Be sure to hold down the button on the original remote for at least 1-2 seconds, otherwise the signal may be too short for the remote to process. 5. If you continue to have trouble teaching the commands, start with the remotes 2 inches apart. Then try again with, slightly increasing the distance each time (2.5 inches, 3 inches, etc). 6. Vary the angle at which the original remote is pointing at the bottom of the remote. 7. Ensure the device's original remote is sending infrared (IR) commands.
NOTE: The original remote is sending RF or UHF commands from the original remote if it will control the device from another room, through a wall).
This information is to search for any code using the SONY RM-VL990T Universal remote:
Using the code search function: Press [S]. All Component Select buttons will flash. Press the button you want to configure. Press [CH+] or [CH-] and [POWER] in turn until the component turns on or off, then press [ENT] to save.
Problem solved. I decided to use the learning function of my remote to learn the wanted commands of the original remote. The remote I used was a Sony RM-VL610 which could learn the original remotes functions easy and quickly. This is a very good remote for only $30 purchased at Target. The Macro commands were also entered rather easily. I did not try this method originally, because I thought it would be too time consuming and difficult. pcwg
