A) What is wrong?;
Your Backlight has gone bad, or the Inverter.
B) How do I fix it?
Replace the Backlight bulb, or the Inverter
C) Backlight bulb's, and Inverters, like everything have a 'lifespan'

From here all I can give you is Generic information, since I do not have the laptop manufacturer name, and Model Number. This is on the bottom of the laptop.
1) An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. A Backlight bulb, (Or more than one), is used to emit enough light.
2) A laptop cannot produce enough power to power the LCD screen, and is also used for power to the Backlight.
I'll have to discuss the way the Display Assembly is put together, and name parts in order to explain the following of how to repair. Again, generic information.
1a) The plastic top of the laptop is the Top Cover. There are different names used by different manufacturers.
1b) Looking at the LCD screen with the laptop open, there is a plastic frame that goes around the edges of the LCD screen, and is in Front.
This is the Display Bezel
1c) The LCD screen is behind the Display Bezel. The LCD screen is a composite of layers. The outside layer that faces you is a protective screen.
Around these layers composing the LCD screen, is a metal frame.
One side, (Or both sides) of the metal frame is removed to access the Backlight bulb.
1d) The Backlight bulb is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Very similar to the fluorescent lamps, (Bulbs) uses in residential, and commercial applications, but on a MUCH smaller scale.
Now to show you generic laptop info on replacing the Backlight bulb for them.

I'm having the same problem. The switch checks out OK but I'm only getting 2 to 3 V across the terminals. Defininitely not enough voltage to light up the bulbs and display. Anybody have any ideas?
