My DVD-CDRW combo drive has stopped working. It won't do an auto-run, or read anything. I can find sites where I can buy a new one for around $150.00. I need to know how easy it is to install a new one in these laptops, whether I can do it myself or just have someone else do it, even though that would be the more costly way.

I had this same problem and fixed it. In many cases there is NO NEED TO GET an new combo if the old one isn't physically broken. All you need to do is run an optical drive fix. This fixes the registry filters and should handle your problem immediately.
Rarely will you find a model with a hard to remove cd-rom drive. Ussually it takes just one screw to remove the drive. If you have trouble replacing the drive yourself there are usually repair manuals available on the manufacturers website, or we'd be happy to find the manual or a tutorial for you :-) (given the exact make and model # of your laptop)
BTW, $150 is a steep price for an optical drive, even for a laptop. You should be able to find it for about a third of that price :-)

The mounting brackets can be removed from your existing drive and installed on this drive. Were you able to remove the old drive?
Yes that samsung drive WILL fit in your laptop. All you have to do is unscrew the mounting brackets from the old drive and screw them onto the new drive. Once again I have no step-by-step tutorial for you, but it is a fairly simple process. The only thing you have to worry about is losing those teeny tiny screws :-)

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.
if this fails to fix the problem
It could be a problem with the lens you could use a liquid type lens cleaner place 2-3 drops on top of a cd/dvd then run it if this fails you might try cleaning the lens it's already gone bad there is no harm in trying If you take a little risk can solve . follow the instruction: Don't panic its very simply. 1. When running your pc , open the drawer.> 2. switch off the ac power 3. remove power cable & sata or pata cable 4. remove all the screw from the back side 5. press clip to open the font panel 6. reverse the cd/dvd rw 7. just remove the cover 8. clean the optical lance 9. use a little( not much )oil place on two steel shaft 10.cover all the equipment 11.now you can fit to your pc Ifit does the same problem please change the cd/dvd rw because the lance has defected
hope this helps
make sure that the cdrw/dvd combo is getting enough power test all leads that are attached to the cd rom including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or
your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cdrw/dvd combo then plug them back in this will activate found new hardware wizard or
you might have to uninstall then reinstall your cd rom or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device ?
control panel admistrive tools, computer management, device manager scroll down cdrw/dvd drives?right click you can? you can update driver, roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver? click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall

M45-S265 (PSM40U07V001) PC is the Laptop model number. I am running Windows XP. All had been fine with the DVD-CDR combo drive. Then one day I inserted a disk and it ususally auto runs right to the install. Not this time. Tried a few times, turned on and off, etc.
Then I thought I'd try the old System Restore...and of course that wouldn't boot either. I looked at My Computer to see what it showed on there, and it didn't even show that drive. If I need to install a new one, is there anyway to get instructions for that?
Thank you for any help,
Laura
Where might I look to find a less expensive optical drive for my laptop, please< i don't have time to sit and search hundreds of sites, but would of course like to get a better price.
I haven't tried to remove the old drive yet, it scares me, but I knkow it has to be easy. The link you sent takes me to a Samsung, but it looks like my Toshiba. Will it work/ are they interchangable like these? The price sure is better if it will fit in my computer. The Samsung name just threw me off. You know this stuff, so if you say Samsung is the one, I certainly will buy at that price!
