You need to unscrew (counterclock) the thin top of the clear container, grasping ONLY the very top of it (5mm high), which is screwed to the top of the gray inner cylinder that contains the blades. This clear top IS NOT glued to the clear container!
Most people probabbly do as I did first, to grasp the whole clear container (because it seems to be a single part), but again, you need to turn ONLY the very top of the clear plastic (you can notice a fine line where the screwed top ends and the big container starts.
I hope you read this before breaking it up!
Good Luck!
Seriously embarassed that I had to look this up online! Very surprised with how many people have posted they broke one trying to do this!
Would have been easier if they would have changed the color of the top or had some sort of arrow or something.
Had the very same question just today- thank you! Agree with the comment below about the design.
Whew! Thank you! We were getting a little frustrated. We didn't keep the instruction book, because lets face it, who thinks your ever going to need them?
Ye, rigth. But in my case the sharpener came in a clear blister, with no manual inside :(
As today, the sharpener stays unplugged on a corner of my desk, because I am tired of its irregular perfomance (uncentered sharping point) and also because an odd noise it makes, like it has something broken inside. So the old fashioned hand-operated sharpener is on duty again.
Great old days when electric sharpeners where great, reliable, strong and a subject of desire for a school boy.
I just came here from the manufacturer web site, they didn't have the instructions to the thing posted anywhere. So thanks a bunch.

You unscrew the top and the whole clear container comes off.
We just bought one and had the same problem. My husband almost broke it trying to remove the entire cylander before he found the lid. He happened to notice a fine line on the top quarter inch and unscrewed it. There is very little definition between the lid and the cylinder. The little paper that explains how to open it was not clear either because they don't diagram the parts, which in this case would be useful. The manufacturer needs to make the cylinder lid a different color or put a fine line at the top of the shaving container. No one should feel silly, the design needs to be tweeked.

Wow...thanks so much...I really am surprised this was on-line...Thank you so much..and yes...I feel a bit stupid! Lol!
I couldn't find any directions on the package. After trying everything to remove the clear cover to empty the shavings, I resorted to the computer. I see why it was on sale for 6.99, from 14.00 at Office Max!
Thank you for saving me from further frustration and sore hands!
After you figure out how to open the top.You are then faced with how to get the lead to that broke off into the blade.
There is another trap door on the blade cover with two notches pry carefully to remove top. Blade cover should slide out.
if you can't do this then bash it with a baseball bat the end result is quite satisfying!
AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FO DAT!
I had the same problem with it. Gave it to a friend and he eventually opened it. Emptied it and put the top back on, lightly. Tried again. Same problem. Asked wife to do it, she jiggled it counterclockwise, then clockwise and eventually doing that repeatedly, got the top off. Mines battery operated and if need be, the top will stay in a drawer or ask someone else to open it for you. I have neuropathy in my fingers, hence no feeling in them.
