I have lost the dvd super multi dl drive, I believe. I have had problems since I bought the acer aspire 5534 notebook. Now my problem is the computer wont boot up or start. It says device required is inaccessible. I thought it was a windows 7 issue, but that is not the case. How can I get it fixed.

I ran into the same problem and found a program on www.download.com Type dvd repair, this program will fix most issues and worth saving on a flash drive, or hard drive for future repairs.

This Super-Multi Drive will write to dual layer DVDs (DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL) at a 4x speed. The full specs of the Acer 5742 are available here: http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/notebook/2010/Acer/Aspire/Aspire5742/Aspire5742sp2.shtml .

You should be able to place a dual layer dvd in the drive and have it recognized. Windows may ask you if you want to format the disc.

Surely to load XP is a DownGrade. As this notebook is dual core, I would run Vista 64 or better still Windows 7 64.
If you wish to persist with an old system, you require SP3 for XP.That may be available from a software store but is no longer supported by Windows.
