DEVICE DRIVER I bought an AOpen ESV8484U CD/DVD writer a couple of years ago. I've recently changed my computer, and can't find the CD containing the driver software. I've tried looking ofr it on the Net to no avail. And the AOpen site is no help either. The device is still in very good shape. Can I get the driver anywhere?

I would say you need a new CD/DVD. This one appears to have given up. These days, they are not very expensive.

It will cost about $30 to buy a brand-new CD/DVD reader/writer.
Any computer-store technician can easily "manually" open your current drive, and remove the CD/DVD media.
Just right click on my computer, go to properties> hardware> device manager> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. there u will find several primary and secondary IDE Channels. Right click on first IDE channel and goto properties> Advanced settings, change transfer mode to "DMA if Available". Repeat it with all the channels. If problem still persists then uninstall the channel containing ur DVD Writer and restart your computer. It will detect new hardware as DVD Writer. Now if it is showing the transfer mode "DMA if Available" by default then your problem is solved.

Well you need to go to the website of the DVD manufacture and get the vista drivers for your device.
Vista does not have native support for most hardware, and very little backwards compatability.
I wish you success on finding the correct driver for your device.
Thank you,

it's a classic drive failure problem where the laser can no longer burn or read dvd's, and show rhr writer as a cdrw, but may still be able to read or write cd's only.
You will have to replace the drive, they are quite inexpensive, and very easy to fit.
my lightscribe does not work
