In the top left hand corner of the touch pad there is a little white dot. Double tap that with your finger and it should light up orange and that means your touch pad is disabled, double tap again to enable it. Hope that helps!
Reinstall your driver for touch pad. In certain cases charger does not work properly and create problem for touch pad.

Hi! I have the solution! I know it's really late. double tap the light with your finger. on the touch pad in the upper left corner, the light is glowing, when you double tap it it will lock the mouse pad. do it again and it un-locks it :)
You do not have to actually disable the touch pad on this laptop to use an "external" mouse. Just plug in your mouse and it will install the drivers if needed and viola, your good to go. If you insist on disabling your touch pad however, you can do that by double tapping the top left hand corner, when you do this correctly, a little orange light will show and the screen will show a notification the the touch pad is disabled. To enable the pad back on, just repeat the same step you used to disable, and the on screen notification will indicate the touch pad is enabled!

Look closely at the touch pad, in the top left hand corner of the pad you should see a little white led shining away.
Tap the led twice, it should turn orange, you've disabled your touch pad, to re-activate it, tap it twice again, this should bring the white led back on.
This laptop has a special feature which allows you to double tap the top
left hand side of the touch pad, and it will then enable, or disable
the touchpad. If you see a orange light on the touchpad, then double tap
the light, and it should enable the touchpad again. On a side note, you
should be concerned with why the touch pad is disabling itself to begin
with!
Underneath the Laptop is a Users Label marked Model it should give the FULL model No. - e.g. Presario CQ42-100 - HP made something like 150 different models for the Presario CQ42 !!! so you can see, I'm going to have to guess about this... If your Touchpad has a black(?) dot in the top left corner - tap this once to turn the Touchpad off while you are typing. Touch it again, to turn it back on. Other Presarios' have a switch nearby to do this...
On most Compaq's of the CQ42 model type, there should be a little light on the top right hand corner of the touchpad, not much bigger than a pinhead. When the touchpad is active the light is out so you shouldn't see the lamp. Quickly double tap the area on the lamp and it should light up. This is an indication that the touchpad is now not active.
