What can cause the car not to start besides the starter

There is a switch on the brake pedal lever that can disconnect the starter from getting power. This switch is suppose to ensure that your foot is on the brake pedal before you shift from Park to other gears.

When you have a problem with this switch, your Brake lights will not light up.

This switch often is hit by the Drivers foot in entering or exiting the vehicle. It can be broken or simply pushed out of place.

My 98 gmc jimmy will not shift out of park

possibly the neutral safety switch connected to the brake pedal is bad. when you apply foot to brake , shouls hear a click with key in run position, this would be the safety solenoid retracting itself from shift linkage, allowing shift lever to move. try pumping rapidly, but easily the brake pedal to see if you can hear click, and or shift from park.

Gear shift wont shift from park

The park in this model is locked out by a pin, that pin is pulled back by an electric solenoid that is powered by the you guessed it, the brake lights. You either have a defective brake light switch (located above the brake pedal) or the connector to the switch is defective due to a broken conductor inside the wires plastic out insulating cover. It is a fairly cheap repair, You can override the lock out by turning the ignition key cylinder half way to the run position and wiggling the shifter at the same time, it may take a few tries but you can get it out of part this way.

96 ford taurus gear shift stuck in park

CHECK IF THE BRAKE LIGHT COME ON WHEN YOU HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL. IF DON'T. CHECK BRAKE LIGHT FUSE. COULD BE A BRAKE SWITCH. THERE IS A shift lock solenoid that receives a signal when the key is on and the brake pedal is depressed that allows you to move the shift lever to be taken out of park.

Can't get my 2000 ford taurus out of park

The gear selector is locked until the system detects the brake pedal is being pressed, the brake circuit then sends a signal to the shifter release solenoid to pull a pin back and let you shift out of park, this is a safety feature required by federal law, U need to have someone see if the brake lights go on when you press the pedal, if they don't check the switch at the top of the brake pedal, if the brake lights work then the little solenoid is defective.
