SOURCE: usb ports not working
Hi stilla, when you were in the device manager did you notice any yellow ! points? This is important for me to know, & will come in handy for re-installing you're audio driver software.
Since you setup this board I'm guessing you installed Windows XP (Home or Pro). (If you installed any version of Vista let me know because Vista is famous for loosing USB ports & CD-ROM drives). Vista will need other suggestive steps to repair.
It is suggested that you run windows update service. This is needed not only for security patches but also for USB ports and other devices connected to you're system. I'm hoping after you updating windows you're USB's will function. When installing update & you will come across .Net framework versions, please install only one at a time. Please do not sip any because there are updates for the update. When you finish updating you're system through windows update service, do not install service pack 3. Wait until these other problem has been addressed.
After the last Win update restart the system (Even if windows does not ask you to). Go back into & run windows update service again. (Choose Custom update this time).
After windows finishes checking you're system, look to the left side of the page. You are looking for hardware updates. If there are some, download & install. Next, restart you're PC and enter the bios. (Press the delete key every 2 seconds until the bios main menu opens). Set Plug & play OS to No. This will be within the Advanced menu.
This allows the bios to set Irq’s & DMA's instead of windows for the basic input & outputs of the motherboard. Pages 2-11 in you’re manual. (This has nothing to do with speeding up or slowing down the computer).
Click on this link. http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?modelname=A7N8X-VM&SLanguage=en-us
This will load Asus drive site for you're A7N8X-VM board. Click the + sign next to Audio. Create a folder on you're desktop & name it Realtek. Download the driver for you're OS & save the driver in the folder you created. The file alc650_wdma341.zip is compressed. You will need to uncompress the file & keep the uncompressed files within the same folder. If you do not have WinZip you can download a free 45 day trial version into you're PC. Free download:
http://www.download.com/WinZip/3000-2250_4-10003164.html
Once WinZip is installed right click once on the file alc650_wdma341.zip. A pop-up window will open, slide down to WinZip & left click, Extract to here. Open add/remove programs. Uninstall the sound driver AC'97. Restart you're PC. When windows finishes loading, open device manager. If there is a yellow ! point within Sound, audio and game controller, right click on it once. Than left click update driver. Windows hardware wizard will load. In the first window click No, not at this time. Click next. Click the circle, Install from a list or specific location & click next. Click in the box Search removable media, (This will remove the green check mark).
Than click the Browse button. Go to & open the folder you created (Realtek).
Click once on the folder WDM, than click OK. The downloaded driver software should install.
Windows sometimes just doesn't install some devices as it should & installing through device manager seems to work much better. Close all opened windows & restart you're PC. If you're sound still does not function than the onboard, integrated sound chip is defective or you're speakers are bad. You're board is beyond Asus 3 year warranty period. You will have to buy a PCI sound card to regain sound for you're system. I can suggest a replacement sound card from these links.

Please let me know if the above suggestions have made a difference? Post any errors, problem or failures. If anything does not go well, explain what did not work so I can possibly help you farther. It's my goal to get you're system to function.
Good Luck!
Mike

I managed to fix it by unplugging the harddrive from the main electrical power source.
