Not Starting at All

So for sometime, my laptop has been attempting to start but as soon as the windows screen appeared, it would shutdown on its own. Twice it started after I thumped on the bottom of the laptop. Now it even does not start. I have removed the battery, tried just with AC adapter which is woking on my other laptop by the way so not sure what to do next?

Thoughts please.

    Thanks,

Do you mean no battery and just AC adapter? So Yes I have tried it but no luck. Or did you mean something else?

Need to reformat the laptop but no disks ????

You can do a system restore. "This can be initiated by pressing ALT + F10 when the computer is first switched on. You will need to hold down ALT as soon as the Acer splash screen appears, and repeatedly press F10. The window of opportunity is very small, so this may take a few attempts. The Disk2Disk recovery feature allows you to recover the system without recovery CDs. This will return your system to factory settings and will delete everything stored on the machine. If possible we strongly advise backing up anything important on your machine before starting the recovery process."

Vertical line running down screen....help.....

LCD is probably getting dead pixels - in other words, starting to fail. It may be like that for years, or you might see additional lines starting to appear quite rapidly. You might want to look for a replacement LCD sometime soon.

Blue screen...sometimes a white screen?

This error is caused by a bad sector or error on the HD. The best course of action to start with would be to either boot up from a windows XP CD or you can try going into safe mode with command prompt. Once you get to a command prompt you will want to type the command chkdsk /r. This will run a scan of the hard drive and repair any issues it is having. If you are booting from an XP CD you will want to choose the options for repair and go to the repair console. For further information please read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297185

For solving blue screen error

HP Notebook PCs - "Windows Unsafe or Sudden Shutdown" Blue Screen Error Occurs During Startup or Boot

Description
Windows XP may not start and the following error message may appear on a blue screen:
Windows Unsafe or Sudden Shutdown
This error occurs after Windows was not shutdown using a safe method. The notebook may have been turned off without clicking Shut Down or briefly pressing the computers Power button. The power may have been suddenly disconnected from the computer or the Power button may have been held for more than 5 seconds.
An unsafe shutdown can damage some of the Windows system files, preventing the computer from starting properly.
Solution
If the error occurs allow the operating system to complete a check of the hard disk. Windows will prompt your to run CHKDSK. CHKDSK scans the hard drive for damaged files and repairs the files if necessary. The scan may take up to an hour depending on the size of the hard drive and the number of damaged files. The computer will restart when the scan is complete and Windows should start normally.
If Windows will not start or the computer will not boot after the scan is complete see: HP Notebook PCs - Troubleshooting a Startup or No Boot Problem (In English)
