This problem is generally caused by worn agitator dogs which are part of the agitator cam under the top portion. The dogs act as a clutch to drive the upper portion of the agitator. The do wear out with age and require periodic replacement. The following link explains:

This is a very simple problem that can easily be repaired by the average do-it-yourselfer for very little money. Replacement parts can be purchased on line at searpspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and look under the "Agitator, Basket and Tub Parts" heading for item number 10. For a little more, the entire cam replacement kit (which includes the dogs) can be purchased as item number 9. If you do not wish to purchase on line, take the part numbers listed on the website and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. These parts are commonly part of their in store inventory.

SOURCE: Top part of agitator won't agitator

You all have a problem with a part called agitator dog.. 4 little hard rubber like pieces that goes in the top agitator.. and yes washing blankets or overload can cause this..pop top cap and you will see a bolt that holds the agitator..remove that and take out agitator.. and replace agitator dogs ( comes in a pack of 4).. make sure they all face same direction... good luck..

You will need a set of agitator dogs. Pull off your agitator cap and look under it, you will see 4(four)small tabs that catch and release the top 1/2 of the agitator.

Model 110.29852991 top 1/2 of agidator doesn't turn. the bottom half does turn.

It leaves soap on the clothes after it goes thru the cycle and I noticed that the top part of the agitator doesn't move hardly. The washers model # is LSR8233JQO and the serial # is CK4729250, Type 111.
The agitator dogs (part # 80040) that grip and turn the top agitator to push the clothes into the bottom agitator during the wash cycle are worn and must be replaced. It costs about $5 and replacing it is an easy task to do.

Disconnect the power to the washer. Open the lid and remove the agitator cap by prying it with a flat-bladed screwdriver off the agitator top. Remove the 7/16 inch stud and seal holding the agitator to the shaft using a socket wrench with extension.

Lift the agitator off the shaft and pull the top agitator off the bottom agitator. Remove the cam that holds the agitator dogs from the top agitator.

Lay the cam upside down and install the agitator dogs on the slots. Hold the cam with the newly installed agitator dogs on one hand and the top agitator upside down on the other. Slide the cam up into the top agitator and turn the assembly in the upright position.

Align the cam and bottom agitator tabs and cut-outs and place the top agitator with the cam over the bottom agitator. Place the agitator assembly on the shaft and rotate it until the grooves match. Push the agitator down and reinstall the stud and seal. Do not over tighten the stud or the agitator will not spin properly.

Agitator not working properly...lower part works while the upper part just sits there not turning
you nead to replace the dogs in the top portion of the agitator.first remove the fabric soffiner despencer from the top of the agitator,next there may be a plactice cover that you nead to remove,next you nead to remove the 7/16 bolt and pull up on the bottom of the agitator and remove the agitator and place it on the floor,put a foot on both sides of the bottom of the agitator,next you nead to grab the top of the agitator and pull up and remove the top of the agitator.place your hand inside the top of the agitator and turn it upside down and remove the dog assembly.replace the rubber dogs and reassemble the agitator and reinstall the agitator.

I have a Whirlpool LSN1000LW0 Washer. How do I separate the agitator to replace the dogs?
remove the fabric softner assemble.if ther is a plastic cover remove it remove 1/2 bolt and reach down under agitator up. put agitator on the floor.put a foot on both side's of the bottom of the agitator.place a hand on both side's of top part of agitator and pull up.turn top agitator upside down and the dog's should come out along with the holder.replace the dog's.to put holder and dog's back in top agitatoruse your 1/2 socket and exstention.place the 1/2 bolt in socket and place holder and dog's on bolt.turn top agitator upside down and feed holder and dog's up in top agitator.holding socket and exstention in top agitator,rotate top agitator down holding dog's and holder in with socket and exstention.place top agitator over bottom agitator and line up the two aliment ear's on bottom agitator and use exstention to push top agitator down on bottom agitator.place agitator back on transmition shaft and replace 1/2 bolt.replace plastic cover and fabric softner assembly.

replace water level knob on whirlpool GSW9650LW We got this machine at a garage sale and it works well, but it is missing the knob that controls the water level, so it can only do small loads. stinky inner washer tub How do you remove the plastic filter on the under side of the inner washer tub? There is residue and crud built up between the plastic and the metal tub. It looks like the tabs can be released but the don't release easily. I'm afraid that the plastic is brittle and will break. If it does break can I just buy the plastic filter or do I have to buy a whole new tub?
