I Have an Older Rainbow (i think it's a d4) my Old roommate ran it once without water. it Still works now (with water), but it's Very noisey on start up Also I Can't seem to remove the seperator (no instructions) but the nut at the end of it appears to free spin the motor when i try to turn it.
Can I Take this apart and Clean/lube it? and if so how? or is this thing on it's last legs?

Thanks Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Rainbow E Series Canister Wet/Dry Vacuum. The Rainbow D4 is an older Rainbow Vacuum and the part where the separator is part of the armature, the separator should be able to be removed and that might be one of the things making noise. As normal maintenance the separator should be removed and cleaned after every use and re-installed, then place a newspaper or towel under the motor unit and turn on the Rainbow and spin the moisture out of the motor unit. This should be done every time you use it. Other wise the Rainbow has 3 fans in the bottom of the motor and if they are weak they will make noise from the motor unit as well. Watch out… the repair of the Rainbow D4 may exceed the cost of a new motor of which will solve your problem of noise and separator --- compare the cost and the labor and make a decision. The Rainbow D4, D4C and SE all are the same vacuum base, only changes were made to the nozzle. As long as the nozzle cord on your D4 has 2 prongs, not 3 prongs you can use the D4 nozzle that looks like This or the SE PE (SE Performance) Nozzle that looks This
Your Rainbow should be o.k if you completely dried it out. But rinsing the hepa filter has usually not worked out well for most people (soory for that news) but good news is that they should last around 8 to 10 years with no rinsing.
There are small brass colored pin going through the latch half way between the upper portion and lower portion, where it is attached to main body of the Rainbow. Take a small nail or dowel put it directly on one end of the brass pin and tap till it comes out. Put the new latch where the old one was and insert the pin till it stops. Then tap slowly so as it pushes though the other side you can line up the hole. When the pin is flush, you are done.
There is only one difference between the D4 and the D4 SE, which stands for D4 (Special Edition). It is the exhaust plug screws in on an SE and snaps in on a regular D4.
Then the SE-PE came along, which stands for (Special Edition-Performance Edition) which has a more powerful motor, with larger motor brushes, for more power and runs on 9.8 amps, where the regular SE and D4 run on 8.8 amps. It also has the newer PN-2 power nozzle, which is very much like the latest E and E2 series Rainbow vacuums, instead of the earlier rectangular ones, that have the bottom metal plate, which will rust. You can upgrade your D4 to one of these, though you will need the electric hose with gas pump style handle, with the built in power corn in it.
They are all D4 models.

Bad idea.... I think the foam got through the separator and into the fan system. When it dried it hardened and now it need to be taken apart and cleaned.
Turn it on for less than 1 sec and if you hear motor making humming sound - it is ALIVE and cleaning (maybe new fan blades too) may be all that it needs. If no sound at all it may be KAPUT. You must have smelled something burning when you turned on and it did not work.
for D4 and SE models - When cleaning I would recommend to replace bearings as they are not that expensive and if you took it apart - maybe a good idea to replace them. Also you probably will need a new gasket as when taking old one off (it is glued) it may rip apart.
