Ok this happened to me before. this is what you do.
1. plug ipod into another computer (possibley a freinds)
2. download the latest ipod software
3. set up as new ipod (your ipod should work like the very first time you used it)
4. plug back into your computer and sync with your itunes
5. ipod should be back to normal

good luck. leave a comment if this does not work please

Help please tell how to exit recovery mode

How to Fix an iPod Touch Stuck in Recovery Mode With a Free Program
An iPod Touch's "Recovery Mode" is for alleviating major operating system issues. Recovery Mode rolls back your iPod's operating system, stripping problematic updates and downloads from the unit. The goal of this total system recovery is to revert the iPod to a stable, usable version. Before you use Recovery Mode, exhaust other troubleshooting methods. In some cases, Recovery Mode is triggered automatically after a failed system update or system restore. When it goes into Recovery Mode automatically, you cannot use your iPod until you complete the recovery process. You can get your iPod Touch out of Recovery Mode using Apple's free iTunes software.

Things You'll Need
-Apple iTunes-USB cable

Instructions
1 Turn on your computer and open iTunes. If you are prompted to download any new iTunes updates, install the updates before proceeding.
2 Plug an iPod USB cable into your computer. Do not plug the other end into your iPod Touch yet.
3 Turn off your iPod Touch. If the iPod Touch is already shut down, skip this step.
4 Press and hold the Home button on your iPod Touch, and plug the other end of the USB cable into your iPod Touch.
5 Release the Home button after you see a white USB icon and the iTunes logo appear on your iPod Touch's screen. At this time, a pop-up should appear on your computer screen, explaining that the software has detected an iPod in Recovery Mode.
6 Click "OK."
7 Click on the iPod Touch from underneath the "Devices" heading on the left-hand side of your screen.
8 Click on the "Home" tab, and then click "Restore." Once it's restored, your iPod Touch goes out of Recovery Mode and you can start using it again. The restoration process takes a few minutes. Do not disconnect your iPod Touch until a prompt appears, letting you know the system restored successfully.

My son updated my 2g ipod touch on his (older?) computer. It is frozen now & won't go past a screen w/the itunes symbol & the usb plug. It will not restore. I have uninstalled & reinstalled...

  • This isn't an iTunes problem. While the iPod is displaying this logo, you need to plug it in to a computer that has iTunes open beforehand.
  • Try using another computer with iTunes installed, or another USB cable for the iPod. Try to restart by holding the sleep and home buttons for about 10 seconds.
  • If this still doesn't work, take the iPod to your local Apple store, where they can check for any hardware problems that may have occurred.

Screen shows usb and Itunes but computer doesnt recognize ipod.

1. Verify if your pc passes the system requirements.
(a) usb 2.0 port
(b) You are running the latest version of itunes

2. Recharge your iPod Touch

3. Check USB connections. Use a USB port that is built into the computer instead of using an external usb hub.

4. Restart iPod Touch. Do the following steps: To restart iPod touch, first turn iPod touch off by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iPod touch will turn off after a few moments.
Next, turn iPod touch on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Is iPod touch not responding? To reset iPod touch, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

5. Restart your computer then reconnect your iPod Touch

6. Try reinstalling iTunes. And if this doesn't resolve the issue, you can also try uninstalling iTunes then reinstalling the latest version.

7. Check if there are third-party software that might prevent iTunes from recognizing your iPod touch. Such software may be security software, anti-virus software and webcam drivers. What you can do is adjust the software settings or you may also temporarily disable the software.

My ipod touch gives me a usb cord with an arrow pointing to an itunes logo and wont let me do anything else but turn it back off and itunes doesnt let me go in because it needs a password but it doesnt let...

Your iPod touch is currently in recovery mode. You probably accidentally disabled it that's why you can't restore it over iTunes.
What you need to do is put it to DFU mode in order for you to proceed with the restore on iTunes. To do that, follow these simple steps:
  1. Plug/connect your device to a computer (PC or Mac)
  2. Turn it OFF
  3. Press and hold the POWER and HOME buttons together for EXACTLY 10seconds
  4. Release the POWER button but keep holding the HOME button until the computer beeps indicating that a USB device is recognized.
  5. Open iTunes and restore your device.

Warning: Restoring will delete all data on your device but this is the only way for you to recover it.

If you don't get it at first, try holding the buttons for lesser time or see the other procedures and some screenshots on my tip (link below):

Ipod wont turn on

If you just purchased it, you will need to install iTunes on your computer and connect the new Touch to the PC after iTunes installs. When you use your Touch for the first time, it needs to synch/register via iTunes first.
Also, to unlock it, just slide the slider on the bottom of the screen after synching with iTunes.
