My husband has a 1987 ford f250 351. He has replaced the starter on it about 5 times so far this year. Today I went out to start his truck and the starter just starting spinning and didn't shut off until we bang on the cylnoid with a hammer. What could be causing this problem? He just recently changed the wire that runs from the starter to the cylnoid. We just don't know what could be going on with this tuck

try to replace the coil and all the spark plugs also make sure that the plugs are gapped right. that info will be on the evaporation sticker onthe core support in the front of the truck under hood. I think it is 0.004 not 100% sure on that. I hope that helps

Timing Chain system. Have you tried spraying a little carb cleaner in intake system to check if your getting fuel if it runs . Check fuel pump.Have you got spark?

There is a spring in the starter that should cause it to disengage after the electricity is removed. Double check that the electricity is removed form the starter side of the solenoid, cause that is the easiest thing to check first. Then take the starter off and have it checked for free at your local auto store. If it seems OK to them it may be the starter is not the right one for the bell housing. If it sticks in to far, the starter gear may be stuck partly in the flywheel.

You said you tightened the battery cables, did you check the other end of the negative where it bolts to the engine. When you tightened the cables you also used a battery brush and cleaned the posts and ends?
