Need new ballast, I think... Where do I get one?

I just bought an LG RU 44SZ61 from an individual. He said it needs a new ballast, is there any way to know if it is actually bad, I am sure it is; when I try to turn on the set on the front of it, since the remote won't turn it on for some reason, the orange light blinks until it turns itself off. You can hear the fans turn on in the back. But I also had no video hooked up to the rear, but I don't think that makes a difference, nothing came up on the screen at all.

Could someone please give me some insight on where to find a service manual on this particular model that might help with the ballast, or where to get a ballast? Thanks, hope something comes up for an answer.

P.S.- When I tried taking the ballast out, I got everything disconnected except the two largest cords, I think they connect to the lamp. I didn't go further into taking it apart, since I didn't exactly know how to get them out. So I put everything back together until I know exactly what to do. AND... I know it's the ballast or something besides the lamp because the guy I bought it from just replaced the lamp.

That place you suggested is not the ceapest place Slinteriors, I e-mailed them wanting to know how much they would want for a new CRT lamp and they are $60 higher than Panasonic. Any other suggestions from anyone? As far as service manuals, I might get from them if they aren't just outlandish, but I've heard from other posters that there may not be any ballast related text inside the service manual for these types of televisons from LG.

Thanks IrishDruid, I tried downloading the service manual files from that site you linked, but they save as ".rar" files and Adobe Acrobat Reader won't open them. Any suggestions?

Nevermind IrishDruid, I found a way to decompress them. Thanks anyway! I am out of town right now so it will be a week until I get back home to test by hooking up a video source to the set, but I can bet ya it's not that, but I'll still try it when I get back though. -Travis

Alright, I have searched the part number for the ballast, and found a site that actually can order the ballast at regular price.

The only deal is that they carry four different ballasts, two of which are for the Philips lamp. I don't know which lamp my tv has, any way of knowing or does it matter which brand of ballast is reinstalled, the one installed now is factory, and with a new lamp, that means it worked with whatever brand the new lamp is, so I should just go about ordering the part number from the service manual (factory ballast), when the time comes and I want to spend the money. Thanks a lot IrishDruid, that was a big help. -Travis

Travis: I have the service manual for the RU44-SZ63D which may be pretty similar. I am trying to replace a ballast myself and bought one on Ebay. It may be the same for yours and they had two in stock. They are used but guaranteed good and if not you get your money back. $61 including shipping. Beats $184 new. Since you disassembled yours, did you go through back for front. I want to remove cover but can't get it off after removing all visible fasteners. Could use a hand with some ideas on getting cover off as ballast is infront under dust cover.

Alanx, I made sure that the screws by the input area are removed, that's all I can think of why it won't come off. Those four screws are easy to miss if you don't look closely. Let me know if that helps; but do you have the link to the eBay store that is selling that ballast? I've searched their multiple times and nothing ever came up for "ballast". Thanks, -Travis

Alanx: sorry, i read your thread and realized you're talking about the guts, not the cover. I didn't take the guts out, now if that's what we're going to have to each do in order to get the two main wires undone from the ballast, I don't know; but I don't really have any more expertise in removing the guts than you do, sorry. -Travis

Alanx: I went through the back of course because right after you take the rear panel off, you can see it there. Look at the service manual and verify with the part number for the diagram being #64. I believe it's two screws to undo the ballast from it's base and two other screws to take off a vertical board that sits in front of the two main wires that I can't figure how to undo. It really doesn't help to take that vertical board off, I ended putting it right back on after taking it off realizing it didn't help to remove it. But whatever you want to do, I had a special screwdriver to undo the screw closest to myself on the ballast, but you might be able to get it out with a stubby screwdriver,a nd if not, then you might have to take the vertical board off. Let me know if you have any other questions pertaining to my brief experience in trying to get the ballast completely out. -Hope this helps, Travis

I have the service manual for the RU-44SZ63D should be similar to the 61d. I am trying to replace a ballast and bought one on ebay for $61 including shipping. Used but guaranteed. Beats $184 new. My problem is getting Screen off to replace. It is under the dust cover in front and looks like best and easiest way. Since you took yours apart, did you go in through back or front.

Some TV models require an input signal for it to work..Before you look to replace the ballast, try plugging in your cable service or a DVD/VCR/CD and see if this activates the TV...

Hope that helps..

You will need WinRar to unzip the .rar files. A Google search should provide a link for download. Download all the 12 .rar to on folder and extract using WinRar. Usually, you just have to do one, WinRar will automatically find the rest and extract them. Once extracted to a different folder, you can view the documents in Adobe Reader.

As for the ballast, it doesn't really matter what company they're from, as long as they fit the requirements and specifications, same any any parts in the electrical/electronics industry!!

    Cheers!

I'm sure that many lamps in these models get replaced unnecessarily. The problem is the contacts where the lamp assembly plugs in. Remove and replug the lamp..
