Netgear WGR614 54Mbps Wireless Router

  1. Begin setup of your Netgear Wireless Router by first reading the instructions in the included manual, and following their guidelines for plugging in and initializing the access point. The first few steps in this guide should coincide with the information found in the manual, however we will follow up with important information on how to secure your wireless access point.
  2. After powering up the router, use an ethernet cable to connect your computer to one of the ports on it marked 1 through 4. Next open a web browser window on the connected computer and typehttp://192.168.1.1 into the address bar and press enter. This will take you to the Netgear Smart Wizard welcome page, click OK to begin the configuration. The router will attempt to detect the type of connection you have and the next message you receive should be Dynamic IP (DHCP) Detected, click Next once you see this.
  3. Next you will enable the wireless capability of your router. In the dropdown box for the region where you are located select United States from the list. On this screen you should also change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) from its default value to something unique so that your Base Station will not be confused with another. Click Next.
  4. You should now see a message confirming that your connection is working and wireless is enabled. However, your are not secured yet. Read the notes and click Done. Then direct your browser tohttp://www.routerlogin.net to continue the configuration. A window will pop up prompting you for your login and password, enter admin for the username and password for the password, then click OK.

Reset password

The default password for the router's Web Configuration Manager is password. NETGEAR recommends that you change this password to a more secure password.
To change the administrator password: 1. On the main menu, under Maintenance, select Set Password to display the Set Password screen. 2. To change the password, first enter the old password, then enter the new password twice. 3. Click Apply.
Best of luck!

I need to reset or find my origional password. Please help. Thanks

If you have changed the default password, you need to reset the router to the factory settings to get in with the default user and password (user admin and password as password, or if that doesn't work try 1234 - these are the default password for NetGear routers). Note that you will lose the ISP settings and wireless settings when you reset the router.

Default factory password

Most of the NETGEAR devices, except ReadyNAS products and Fully Managed switches, have the following default username and password:
  • Username = admin
  • Password = password
    • For older devices, password = 1234
If you have changed the default password and have forgotten it, you will need to reset the NETGEAR device to factory default settings in order to use the default username and password. Click here to learn how to reset the NETGEAR device to factory default settings. Please note: restoring a device to its factory default settings will erase any changes you have saved to the device.

This applies to:
  • Most of the NETGEAR devices such as routers and smart switches.

I am trying to connect another computer to my wireless network but i do not know my netgear code, where do i find this?

Netgear code? Can you be more specific?

Are you referring to the password required to connect to your wireless network called "Netgear"? I assume you're being asked for a password on the 2nd computer when trying to connect to the wireless network called "Netgear".

  1. In a web browser, enter the router's IP address - either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 by default.
  2. When prompted for a Username and Password, enter the default username and password (admin; password) unless you have already changed it. NETGEAR recommends changing the default password to increase the security of your network.
  3. Select Wireless Settings from the Setup menu in the left-hand navigation bar.
  4. Under Wireless Network, enter your desired network name in the Name (SSID) box. This is currently set to "Netgear" most likely.
  5. Under Security Options, select WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].
  6. Under Security Options (WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK), enter your desired network password into the Passphrase box.
    • WRITE DOWN or KEEP NOTE of your network name, security option and passphrase - you will require them to connect wireless computers and devices to your network.
  7. Click Apply to save the settings.
Once you've set this password, you can use it to connect to "Netgear" on your second computer.
