I have a Ruud Achiever 10 seer..Warranty 5 years. Contractor states out of warranty. I travel and out of my condo 3 mos. at a time. The last time the a/c was turned on was last summer and my son stated while staying over night that It was not cooling and needed Refrigerant. I forgot all about it. Cam home in April turned on A/c-not cooling. Called contractor- compressor frozen. I called on April 25, He cancelled appt. on April 28 and came on the 30th. I had the electricity turned on April 30, 2005. He says it's out of warranty. What should I do? It's so hard to trust people these days especially when they know you don't know about these things.

Re: Who should I contact--Raleigh, NC
Huummm... i'd pull out the invoices to equipment there's always a 5 year warranty on compressor. sometimes contractors says it's out of warranty to sell you a new unit, (they usually hate repairing.) If your invoice says it's less than 5 years old well technically your under warranty. If contractor doesn't want to honor warranty you should contact any local consumer affairs office and file a claim, sometimes if the equipment is less than 5 and more than 2 you might have to pay a small fee to get the replacement compressor. And you might have to pay some fees, at least installation of it. and the only time it needs refrigerant if's there's a leak. I'd on on that line for now hope to be of assistance today.

IF the compressor is under warranty they should not charge you anything. it is according to what type of warranty you purchased, If the business is gone, i don't know much of what you can do other than calling ruud directly. Most likely the unit is past the warranty. Call ruud to be sure.
If you take all the numbers off the compressor and condesning unit and call an authorized RUUD parts dealer in your area, they should be able to verify your inquiry.
Unless there was a special circumstance, most compressor warranties are 5 years, unless the compressor was replaced during the 5 year period, in which case you should get 5 more years assuming the service was performed by an authorized service company.
It sounds like your condenser fan motor may be locked up or the capacitor that helps give the condenser fan motor a kick to get it started may be defective. Try turning your system on and using a long screwdriver try to push the fan blade on the condenser fan motor to see if it will run normally if you give it the starting boost it needs. If it does run at full speed and doesn't over heat or start and then slow down then you probably only need to replace a simple 10-12$ capacitor. If it barely turns, makes an odd humming sound or overheats etc. then you will have to replace the condenser fan motor. This is assuming that the outdoor condenser has the 220v supplied and the 24v supplied to the compressor relay, that the compressor relay is engaged and suppling 220v to the condenser fan motor.
