Hi Team We replaced our existing Nortel Switches with Nortel 2550T 48 Port Switches and since then our VoIP phones are not getting IP from DHCP. Putting static IP is working. Can you please guide me if there is any issue with Nortel Switches & DHCP configuration. Regards Munish

you need to reset the setting before you can get the access to the device. Hard reset should be good. once done, plugin to your existing LAN, discover the IP taken via DHCP. configure the device.
Web interface should help you to do quick configuration.

Try a different phone on the same router, does that fix it?

You can turn any router into a switch by disabling the DHCP server on the router. Now as far as being able to get an IP for a machine, there must be a gateway device on the network whether that is a computer, router or FW appliance that DHCP IP(s) or static IP(s) can be used by the switch. You want to the machines on the router (now a switch) not accessible, then you change the subnet on the router (now a switch) to be a different subnet mask than the gateway device.

The principles for making a router a switch and using it are the same no matter if it's a wire or wireless router or brand name being used.

If you want to use two routers with each using their own DHCP and subnets, then you connect routers together taking the WAN port of the second router and plug it into the Uplink port of the gateway router or FW appliance if the device has an Uplink port.

Add a computer to your network, and install Microsoft Windows Server on that computer, and enable its "DHCP-server" component. Then, this computer will supply IP-addresses for all the other computers connected to your switch.

The switch is _NOT_ a DHCP-server; therefore, you need to add a DHCP-server.

when you plug it in, and the Nortel logo appears on the screen, swipe the three buttons that are under the display, with your finger, and that will get you into programming.
you will select following
Manual DHCP config? yes
Partial? yes
enter the IP address of your system
for port #: enter: 7000
retries: enter 5
for the rest of the programming select "0" till the end

your voip enabled phone uses dynamic ip addressing so doesn't have a fixed ip. however if you want to configure the phone Connect the WAN port of the SPA922 to your network (router, switch or hub). Make sure that you have a DHCP server so that the SPA922 will get the IP address.

To login to web based administration follow the steps

Access the web based setup page of the SPA922. Verify the IP address through the LCD. Click Menu then press 9. It should show you the DHCP IP address. Open a browser and type that in the Address bar. 

Click Admin Login .


Note: The SPA922 does not have a username and password by default. If you are asked for a username and password and you have not configured a password, it means that the SPA921 is locked by your VoIP provider. You need to obtain the password from your VoIP provider.

Here's what you need to do:

First, be sure to assign an ip address(in the proper subnet) to each VLAN.

Second, use the ip helper-address command in the context of each VLAN, the address used should be the address of the DHCP server

Third, Add a scope for each additional VLAN on the DHCP server.

The switch will route the DHCP request to the proper server based on the ip helper-address command parameter and based on the ip address of the VLAN that is passed tot he server, a DHCP address in the proper subnet is automatically configured.

Here is a sample:

ProCurve Switch 3500yl-24G-PWR# configure
ProCurve Switch 3500yl-24G-PWR(config)# vlan 33
ProCurve Switch 3500yl-24G-PWR (vlan-33)#ip address 192.168.33.254/24
ProCurve Switch 3500yl-24G-PWR (vlan-33)# ip helper-address 10.1.2.250

You will probably need to set it up differently, I do not know the belking router, but normally the VOIP functions only work on the wan port of these routers so you should make the connections as follows:

INET ---> (wan) DLINK (lan) -----> (wan) BELKIN (voip) --> Phone
|--------> Wired Computers
|--- ) ) ) Wi Fi computers

On the DLINK enable DHCP and set a fixed IP for the Belkin router, either by setting the belkin in an IP outside the DHCP pool or setting it from the DHCP server.

This configuration workd well with a DLINK and a Motorola (vonage) router I have.

I think it is losing connectivity of T-Lan Network.
