Canon PowerShot A70 screen stays black

Did you press the display button several times? To cycle through all the display settings, of which the display off is just one.

It is known problem of ccd imager failure in Canon A70 camera and ccd imager will be replaced to get live view in camera mode to take fresh pictures.
