I own a GE profile spacemaker jvm1490. When the door is closed there is a running noise. It stops if the door is pulled slightly. It also makes this noise when the microwave is in cook or reheat mode. This has been happening on and off for the past year. Does not affect operation but very annoying.

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are working.

You may have a shorted cooling fan relay on the control circuit board.

We regularly repair these control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid with a one-year guarantee.

Or you can order a whole new control circuit board (smart board) here.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please include your full model number from the tag in or on the unit) for a free estimate and free tips & do-it-yourself advice.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

JVM1490 owners manual

GE has the manuals for their products on their support site: http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/literature/ . The direct link to the Use and Care manual for most JVM1490 Spacemaker Convection/Microwaves is http://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=49-40345.pdf .

I hope this helps.

When the microvave in plugged into outlet it makes a buzzing sound but works ok. When the door in opened the noise stops but starts back up when door is closed.

I just had the same problem with my ge spacemaker microwave model number JVM1490bd. I removed the grill on the top of the microwave with two screws on top. There is one screw that holds the front touch pad on, remove the screw and lift up to remove. The damper assembly is on the upper left, my door was sticking and didn't make the limit switch. I moved the door back and forth making the switch a couple times and that solved the problem.

GE Profile Space, aker 1800 microwave is making

You should keep it unplugged until it's fixed. If it's cooking while it should be off, that can damage the oven or even start a fire.

It's either a failed door switch or door switch mount, or a bad electrolytic capacitor on the control board, which we can repair for $39.95.

If you're hearing a fan or motor running, I'd suspect the switch. See this file for help.

If it's a buzz (like a power line buzz) then I'd suspect the board capacitor.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please include your full model number from the tag in or on the unit) for more help.

We have a GE Profile Spacemaker XL 1800. It began making a laboring noise and stopped cooking at the same time.

Sounds like the Magnatron or the HV Cap or diode is failed. Process of will show you which one. Very dangerous area to work in, not for the untrained. Eric

GE Profile Spacemaker 2.0 Microwave

If it goes dead or blows the breaker or GFI when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. Other times, it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There may also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

JVM1490 Low fan noise when not in use shuts off when door is open turns back on when door is closed?

it sounds as if your door switch is out of line. If this only happens when you close the door you may want to check they switches on the inside. one of them is either bad or you just may need to line it back up.
