5 different colored vertical lines on black and white picture.

50pfp5332d/37 philips plasma TV worked fine in the morning. After work I turned it on and got 5 different color vertical lines on a black and white picture. Sound is fine, tried unplugging and plugging everything. Hooked different tv up to satellite and it worked fine. Has worked great for about 8 months. Help very much appreciated, thanks

Hello wisportsfan2,

Try the following first:

If you are using a direct cable connection from the wall outlet;

  1. Check the incoming cable or antenna signal connection to ensure that it is properly secured to the TV's antenna input.
  2. If the connection is good, perform the auto program and ensure that the Installation mode (Antenna or Cable) is selected correctly.
If you are using a coaxial connection from the Cable or Satellite box to the TV;
  1. Set the TV to the channel specified by the service provider.
  2. Change the channels at the Cable or Satellite box to view the program.
If you are using a video connection (CVBS, S-Video, YPbPr, HDMI) from the source (DVD, Cable or Satellite box) to the TV;
  1. You do not need to perform auto program to search for the channels.
  2. Press the 'SOURCE' button on the remote control repeatedly to select the correct input source.
If you are using an HDMI connection from the source (DVD, Cable or Satellite box) to the TV;
  1. Reset the TV and source by unplugging it from the power outlet for 30 seconds.
  2. Press the play button on your source device. If the source is HDMI CEC compliant, the TV will automatically switch to the HDMI input.
  3. If your source is not HDMI CEC compliant, turn on the TV and switch to the HDMI input.
  4. Turn on your source.
If you are sure you have selected the correct input or channel but still have no picture and sound;
  1. Try resetting the TV by unplugging it from the power outlet for 30 seconds.
  2. Press the 'SOURCE' button to select the correct input source.
You can try the "Whack" method first though..Just smack or whack the set with your hand or fist around the cabinet to see if that will either aggravate or restore the picture. If so, it means there is a loose connection or cold solder joint of some kind, which you may be able to repair yourself if you have the soldering skills.

If it still does not work, it looks like there is a problem with the vertical blanking due to faulty ribbon connectors, although there are several things that can cause it.
But in my honest opinion, it is best to have an expert technician come in and do some tests on it in order to diagnose the root cause of the issue. It is not easy to fix this yourself, if you have no experience, as there are a lot of parts that have to be removed before you can reach the components. It could be as simple as a loose connector ribbon or a bust capacitor, but it could also be more complicated. Hence, in my honest opinion, better get a qualified technician.

Hi wisportsfan2,

With the indulgence of sweet_rascal...

I would suggest that you consult your dealer or claim warranty repair with any Samsung Service Centers. Should the option be available, may I also suggest you ask for a replacement unit. A number of similar issues are known of this very nature due to defective PDP a rather expensive repair. Additionally, some have reported improvements with firmware updates but likewise would require the services of an authorized service center.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

TV sound but no picture

Can you tell me which Cable box you are using?Which model/region?

The possibility is that the HDCP handshake could not have happend correctly and hence the issue. Try to connect to different HDMI input of TV from Cable box. If possible change the resolution of cable box and check video

I have a Philips plasma 42 with black lines across the screen

I would first check if there is an available firmware upgrade for your model .Upgrade requires you to download firmware from philips website.Then transfer it to a memory stick .Then use a memory stick reader to plug into tv for firmware upgrade.Other wise the set would probably need repair .Possible a bad SSB board or another issue

Television has sound but no picture

Check the cables first that connect to your video device, are they in tightly?  Test the cables on another TV to make sure they haven't gone bad, which is common.  Also check the input selection on the TV to make sure it matches with the video input the cable is connected to.
