Check with a Viking dealer whether Viking offers a conversion kit. My guess is that rather than offer such a kit, Viking would rather sell replacement floppy drives or a newer model of machine.
I have a Designer I USB that suddenly started not reading the usb stick that came with the machine. I was terrified that my machine was going bad, but I always start with the cheapest solution first. I bought a new usb stick, loaded the designs from the old one into my software then loaded everything on the new usb stick. My machine reads it every time so far. I replaced the usb stick about 3 months ago and have not had another problem since. I don't know if this is your problem, but usb sticks can go bad and since they are so cheap, I would try this first.
Drivers are on the installation disk. 3D will have it on cd#1 and 4D on the dvd. With the disk in the drive, plug the dCard reader/writer in and use the "add new hardware" wizard to allow the drivers to install automatically. Now,either repeat this for each usb port or remember to always plug in to the same port.
You need to use either Organizer or Disk Manager to put designs on the floppy disk. Both of these are Husqvarna programs, not part of your computers operating system. If you copy shv file directly, the machine does not have all of the information that it needs to read the files. If the folder containing your original shv files that you purchased contains additional files, you just need to copy EVERY file within that folder to the floppy disk and it might work. Don't attempt to move individual files to the floppy. You will need them all.
First you need the USB upgrade kit that has the connectors and parts to change the cover of the machine. Next, you will need a new main circuit board if your machine was made prior to about 2006. At this point, the cost of parts is about $489. If you can get someone to install these for $10, you can get this done for under $500. Otherwise, go to an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer and check into trading your Designer 1 in for a Designer SE. You will then be able to plug in an external 3.5 floppy drive to read your old disks, a USB stick, or plug directly into your computer and read them from the hard drive (an upgraded Designer 1 can read ONLY from the stick). Used Designer SE's are very reasonably priced since the introduction of the Designer Diamond as the new top of the line and you may be able to get a full manufacturers warranty on the gently used machine.
The Designer 1 needs the design in an shv format in order to read it. The floppy disk for an older machine may be created using several different programs but the Husqvarna Viking module is known as Disk Manager. It is included with many of the HV software packages. With a newer USB Designer 1, the program is Disk Manager USB.
If the machine is reading the file to not be found it is probably that the designs are on the floppy but the person sending did not read them to the floppy right. they should have been read thru the softwear.
You need the USB Manager software to view the files. Have a look at all the software that were supplied with the machine. Load the embroidery software on your laptop and then open the USB manager.
When it opens it will show a light blue screen and grey icons to the left. Click in "disk", then click on "read disk" and you should be able to see your designs. The grey icons will turn orange were designs are stored, and the grey ones indicate empty space for more designs.
