I have the GE XL 180 model and I started heating up food after 1 minute it stopped working. Inside the microwave the turning plate and walls of unit was really hot. We unplugged unit. After about a few weeks it worked fine again. Then,it stopped heating the food all together. What could be the problem. Should I replace it? Or buy a part. Thanks so much!
This is normal. That's why I always recommend to my customers that the food be placed slightly off-center on the turntable. An analogy I refer to is stirring paint: If you stir paint with a stick by simply rotating the stick in the center of the can, it's far less effective than pulling the stick around an imaginary circle halfway bewteen the center and the edge.

Sounds like the problem is in the high voltage. Most common would be magnatron, capacitor and diode. For safety reasons this should be checked by a professional. Look in your owners manual because some high voltage parts have a longer warranty than 1 yr.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:
- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part

The Litz Coil or Magnetron Tube has failed. You can look for blown fuses when you remove it but there is usually another reason it blew and will most likely continue to do so if replaced. They are not worth repairing so it may be time to get a new one.

Underneath the microwave, on the right & left hand corner sides at the back, there are levers that you pull down & it releases the mounting bracket.
The magnetron may have either failed or
is not being supplied with the extremely high voltage required to run
it.
Make sure the !!!!capacitor is discharged!!!!!
before attempting any sort of repair.
Check the door interlock
switches first then the high voltage diode with either an AVO model 8
on high resistance range for short circuit, the feed fuse on the
primary of the high voltage transformer and then finally, the
magnetron is best checked by substitution.
Hope that helps.
