I have a Maytag mav6200ww top load washer. Recently, it has quit agitating and making a roaring striping noise. Although it will still spin and drain if set to the spin cycle. If you reach inside and try to turn the spindle back and forth it makes a grinding noise from under neath the washer. I have checked the belt and and it seems to be intact and spinning freely.

It is your Transmission. Mine did the EXACT same thing just a couple days after your post. If you want some troubleshooting advice, part numbers, where I bought my parts, or advice on disassembly/reassembly, I will be glad to help. The truth is, I already wrote a detailed answer to your problem and before I posted it I read the "Terms of Use" page, and when I went back to the "solutions" page, everything I wrote was gone. So, if you want it, let me know and I will try again.

SOURCE: Grinding sound during agitation cycle on my Maytag Performa

Its probably you stator plate and rotor. But you need special tools for this repair. There a spring that is under 200 pounds of pressure and if you take the screws off that hold the plate its going to fly into you face if your dont use the special tools to depress the spring. Is it more of a clanking kinda of noise? DOes it olnly happen with heavy loads? Try this out. Fill the washer with water only. and get it into a wash cycle with water only. If there is no noise then put in like a load of towels. A heavy load. Now if you hear the noise now then its for sure you stator plate and rotor..hope this helps, but like i said you need those special tools to do this repair or injury can result from the spring part.

I have an old Maytag sudsaver that is agitating very slow and therefore not cleaning very well. Spins fine. Belts replaced recently. Do these machines have "agitator dogs"?

First be sure your not using a delicate cycle. If the agitator uses Dog agits, the bottom half of the agitator will move back and forth while the top half moves in one direction. If the dog agits are broken, you would be able to hold the top half of the agitator still while the washer is on.

Maytag Top Load Washer MVWB850YW making loud noise in spin cycle.

If it's a roaring noise, the tub bearing is probably wearing out. Spin the tub a little with your hand, if you hear a little of the roar, that's it.

Maytag washer wont agitate

Well if it does it in all cycles you can rule out the timer. I would say the agitator is maybe striped out.

Could you describe the noise you are hearing. This will help to determine what to look for.

Roaring washer

This is probably a part of the tank water seal. There is a bearing in there also. Does it leak water from that area? Usually the seal goes bad and it starts to drip water down into the bearing below, which starts to rust and then starts to make noise. If you can locate the bearing, you might try dripping a small amount of oil into it to see if it changes the sound any.

Loud noise

sounds like the absence of lubrication in the transmission. could be a bad bearing on the pulley side
