I have a WKCE #1060 bought in 2004 that no longer cools.I have been told that just getting a tech out to look at the unit will cost several hundred dollars, nevermind the cost of any parts (guys in my area in San Mateo are charging $100 per hour). Can you suggest a cheaper way to get the unit fixed?

The standard way to make a CB radio get more range would be to purchase a inline amp. This will boost your signal tremendously and you should be able to speak with people several hundred miles away. A longer antenna would help too! No adjustment in unit will extend range. They have been factory set for max output already.
A PAIR OF FAN MOTOR WILL COST YOU$90 DLLRS PLUS INSTALL, ANY ONE CAN INSTALL THE FANS , UNIT WILL HAVE TO BE REMOVED FROM INSTALL, ONCE ON A TABLE DRILL OFF THE RIVETS AND REMOVE COVER, LIFT THE BLUE INSULATION COVER THAT WILL BE EXPOSED AND YOU WILL SE ALL 4 FANS TWO COLD SIDE(EVAP SIDE) TWO HTO SIDE (CONDENSER) USE A PHILLIPS SCREW DRIVER TO REMOVE FANS INSTALL THE NEW ONES AND CLOSE UNIT USING SELF TAPPING SCREWS OR 1/8 RIVETS AND A HAND HELD RIVET GUN.
A WKCE UNIT SHOULD BE AN R-134A SYSTEM NOT AN R-22 IF IT IS A R-22 IT SHOULD SAY SO ON THE TAG ON THE BACK OF THE UNIT NEXT TO THE CONDENSER COIL(BEHIND THE WHITE GRILL) IF IT IS AN R-22 IT SHOULD BE A MECHANICAL THERMOSTAT UNIT (SCREW ADJUSTMENT ABOVE THE FRONT BROWN GRILL) IF R-22 MODEL 2200 13 OZ IF R-134A MODEL 2200 10 OZ
MANUFACTURER CAN PROVIDE INFO ALLSO AS LONG AS YOU PROVIDE THEM WITH MODEL AND SERIAL NUMBER OF THE UNIT 858-566-7473
the low side pressure is defend on the size of your ref.but if it is use in home appliance not in commercial it its range 12 psi more or less but yuo consider the cooling temp. of your suction line but if it look sweating it means your suction pressure is ok if not add refrigerant charge until it sweat.
A WKR 1060 SHOULD BE AN R-22 REFRIGERANT UNIT AND IT SHOULD STATE SO ON THE UNITS TAG ON BACK OF THE UNIT. I IT IS IN FACT AN R-22 MODEL 1060 IT USES 9oz OF R-22 IF IT IS AN R-134A IT USES 10 oz
I'm not familiar with your unit, but sounds like condenser problems. Check for a dirty coil on the backside or underneath the unit. Also, if it has a fan for that coil, make sure it's running when the compressor is running and that the blades are clean. Other than that, it could have developed a refrigerant leak.
The problem with window units and any service tech will tell you it cost more to repair than you can buy at Walmart or home depot. Unless you know someone who can charge it for you. Window units are a sore subject. A 200 dollar window unit might cost 200 dollars to charge system. SORRy rusty
Yes, it will cost you at least $150.00 for a repair tech to walk to your house, but your case sounds like your motor had problem, When the motor running loudly for several weeks, because it lack Freon R-22, that why made a loudty noise, some place is leaking very slowly, your compressor need freon. I think it is going to cost you at least several hundred to repair it, but if you can find a used working Reg.probably you can save some money.
Please ask your friend who might give you some their opions.
I bought the mitsubishi black diamond gray 65819 is under warranty and had same problem , turns off like after 2seconds ,it can be fixed people but u need a sears tech, I had one come out and was told they no longer can get the part ,but he had to take it to repair it and yes its was a steal for me ,depending where u live the cost for me would have been $350 for part,$200 labor its the board that the power cord is connected to in tv... I live in s.a. texas , the unit that set up the service is 9905 ,the repair unit is just down the street from them off culebra so if u get tech says cant repair it this one does,it helps if u have the warranty or protection agreement
