Sounds like the drive in the thing is shot or the controller itself.
I remember a friend having one of those I dont recall it having any screws but it did have a snap apart case. Use a thin flat head screwdriver to locate and snap apart the catches.
If you can get into the thing to replace the drive and get the same result then the controller is shot and you will not have any luck fixing it unless you are good at surface mount soldering.
For now, check that the cables are good and that you are connecting it to a good port on your computer.
It is not uncommon to have external drives go kaput for seemingly no reason. The drives they tend to use dont like to be moved AT ALL when they are powered on, this is not condusive to an EXTERNAL case as it is too easy to move around.
Good luck. Let me know if you have any problems getting it apart, I can look up my friend and take his apart, yea hes cool like that.

Why a wd elements 320gb external hard drive only registers 298 gb when connected to computer?

Because the remaining space is for the file allocation tables. That tells the computer where to look on the hard drive to find the files. It's like an index for the hard drive.

I have a Western Digital Passport Essential 320GB to back up my PC. Now, I don't know why, the file wdsmartware.exe doesn't run and appears the message "WDDM service no running". Can you help me...

You must restart the WDDM Service. To do this you must be logged in as an administrator:

1. Press the Win Key (between left "ctrl" and "alt) + "R". That will open the Run Dialogue Box.

2. Type "services.msc"

3. Scroll down to WDDM

4. Right click ----> Properties

5. Verify startup type is "Automatic"

6. Click "Start" ---> "Apply ----> "OK"

HOW TO CHANGE 320GB SATA HDD TO 500GB SATA

Yes. The case doesn't care what size the drive is. The computer is just asking for the USB driver for the case. Check the WD site for the driver for the model of MyBook that you have. That should cover it.

How to open the case of a my book wd 320gb

See my response to someone else at the following link: http://www.fixya.com/support/t587080-external_hard_drive_not_recognized . Not sure if the WD My Book you are trying to open is the same as a 500G. Mine has a black case, resembles a book and measures approx 7" high x 5 1/2" deep x 2 1/4" thick. I was able to open my WD My Book 500G drive but not w/o tearing up the rubber around the edge. Once I got it open, I discovered that there are tabs at the top and bottom of the case. The tabs are recessed w/i small rectangular holes and hard to see unless you look at it w/ a bright light. The tabs are located about 1 inch from the front edge of the drive on the top and bottom. It appears that you have to depress both tabs w/ flat tip screw drivers (or some other similar device) while pulling on the sides of the casing - you almost need three hands (maybe even more) while trying to get it open. The rubber around the edges fits tightly so it is extremely difficult to pull it apart w/ the rubber still in place. There must be some other trick to opening the case but I'm not sure what it might be. Not sure what you can do once you open it unless you have another drive that you can swap parts w/.

Good luck. Let me know if you figure out how to open the case w/o tearing up the rubber.

My Book 320gb

you don't, without voiding the warranty, if you want to void the warranty, you'll have to crack the case along the seams where it's sonic welded together.
