Well, it's obviously your external WD drive infected with virus which stop you from accessing the data by turning them into shortcuts (such as 1KB or 2KB). This blog article how to fix folder become shortcuts should help you out. Follow the step by step please. Note: do not attempt to format the drive before you try.

I believe this is a trojan. I have the same problem. I found by going into Properties-shortcut tab- you have to rename the shortcut to the correct shortcut. You should notice some wierd file name like "keuiku.scr." Simply rename it to the original name and it works for me.

It sounds like your hard drive is virus infected. Have you tried to scan this drive with your computer antivirus tool?
You should always be careful when you decide to separate/delete some suspicious files.
Or you prefer to firstly use a hard drive data recovery freeware that could deeply scan your computer and recover back all your needed data back:

Remember to back up everything important on different drives next time.

I have a 500 gig portable hard drive and all of my files have turned to 1 kilo byte shortcuts how can i retrieve them back

This is going to be hard to hear, but those are just shortcuts, not the files themselves. Which simply means that if the shortcut no longer has a valid file to point to, those files are not and never actually were on the drive. I see this alot where I work as people do not understand how to actually copy their files for backups. Clicking and dragging often produces this result. In most cases if the original files are gone, then there is no way to retrieve them.

Can not open files on other computers from WD external drive

Actually, I have a similar problem.

If you get an error message that says something like "You do not have permission to access this file" or "Access Denied" then these steps should be a temporary fix:
  1. Go to the menu bar & select Tools>Folder Options
  2. Select the view Tab, & look for "Use Simple File Sharing". Uncheck this (Disable it).
  3. Right-click on your external drive icon & click "Properties". Choose the "Security" tab & click on "Advanced".
  4. Click the "Owner" tab, then select the user from the list below (whatever user you're logged in as). Then check "Replace Owner on subcontainer and objects", & click OK>OK.
You are done! But if you don't need the whole HD, you can do steps 3-4 on whichever folder/file you want to access to reduce time taken.

Remember, this is temporary, meaning if you take the HD to another computer then you will have to repeat the steps to regain access of your HD. Any permanent solution?
