I have the large copper floor model Charmglow patio heater. It will not stay lit. Many years ago when I was a maintenance man at an apartment complex and the gas heaters wouldn't stay lit it was usually a bad thermo coupler. I was wondering if this was the same problem and I could order a thermo couple or if you think there is another problem
I have the same heater and I'm looking to replace the very top piece that covers the heating element and disperses the heat. ANy ideas on that?I have the same heater and I'm looking to replace the very top piece that covers the heating element and disperses the heat. ANy ideas on that?

From what you have described, it sounds like the Thermocouple is going bad and needs to be replaced. As far as not being able to relight the pilot right away is concerned ... that's a safety feature. The control has to reset itself, before you can relight it, if the pilot goes out on it's on. As it did in your care. It usually takes about 2 - 3 minutes for the control valve to reset itself.
As far as replacing the Thermocouple is concerned, it's somewhat of a specialty item, because of it being in a tall patio heater. However, armed with the Model # of your Charmglow Patio Heater, you can probably purchase one from the manufacturer, Chamglow.
The themal couple is probably the culprit. You will see one end of it hanging into the pilot. The pilot heats that end creating a small electric current that allows gas valve to operate. There is a small copper line from the tip near pilot other end goes into gas valve. You can buy universal replacement kits. Usually around $15.00. RV parts store good place to look.

I'm having the exact same issue as of Nov 2010 with my Charmglow Patio Heater. Only used it a few times and once I get the pilot light lite, It will not migrate over to the burn section of the themostat. Any suggestions?
I'm told by Charmglow that the problem is the Thermocouple. iHowever,it took me several calls to get someone to admit this. They are sending a new thermocoupler. My heater is less than a year old and under warranty--but it's a shame things like this happen.
Originally I was told it could'nt be the thermocoupler as they normally last at least 5 years.
There must be a blockage in the hose and regulator or your large tank may be checking and not allowing the unit to stay lit. Remove the large bottle. Let the gas line equalize for about 30 seconds and then reattach the bottle. Very slowly, open the knob on the large tank and I mean very slowly. Did I say open it slowly. The new OPD propane tanks often have a very touchie excess control valve that won't allow enough gas through if opened too rapidly. Now tray and light the heater. If you still experience the same, get a technician involved so they can inspect the gas pressure.
