Downloading photos from Canon 400D direct to Canons photo editing programmes on new windows Vista computer.

Every time I attach my SLR digital camera to my new Windows Vista computer, the photos can only be downloaded to Vista Picture Editing and not my installed Canon photo editing programme as it did on my old Windows XP computer. Do I need a new driver for this as Canon's solution CD is only for XP? It is so frustrating to have to transfer all downloaded photos to Canon's Zoom Browser, and even then I get error messages saying Raw files cannot be saved!

I am connecting my camera to my PC via the appropriate lead and nothing happens. An error message says, 'camera not recognised'. I have been on Canons web-site and it says 'no driver needed as computer will automatically recognise camera' but it doesn't!

As I take loads of photos on my EOS 405 I do not want my photos to go directly to Windows vista editing programme as I sometimes take RAW images and Windows does not deal with those.

Everything was OK with XP but not with Vista.

Thanks for your help. Yes, I have just purchased a SanDisk Reader, but the photographs still go direct to My Pictures in windows. Anyway, thanks again I will keep trying to resolve this issue.

CANT E- MAIL OR SAVE USING VISTA

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

So eventhough you are getting a camera not recognized error you are still able to open the images in windows?

Do you have a memory card reader? You may be able to read the raw files directly from the memory card

How are you trying to "download" these pictures? Are you copying them to your harddrive or doubleclicking them to open?

There are two ways to solve this problem. I am assuming you are simply clicking on the pictures and choosing "edit" or double clicking on the pictures and they are opening in "Vista picture editing"
The first way to overcome this is by opening the desired program first (in this case canon's photo editor) and then choose open and find the desired photos.
The other way is to set the file type association in vista so that RAW programs open with the canon program see below for step by step:
1. Click Start
2. Click default programs on the black bar
3. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program
4. Find the file types you want to open automatically in your canon editing program (RAW .jpg etc)
5. Click once at the top of the page click change program
6. A new window will open, if it does not list the correct program click browse at the bottom of the window and find your editor in it's folder.
7. Select the desired program by double clicking
8. Click OK
9. Click close
10. Test the new file association by double clicking a RAW file or one of the other file types and see if it loads into the correct program.

The final (and this is simply my plug for open source programs) solution would be to try something like GIMP (it is a photo editing suite developed under linux but adapted for windows) you can search for it on google.

If you are having trouble with any of these steps please post a comment and I will try and add some clarification.
Hope this helps

You should not have any problems.
ALTERNATE WAY TO TRANSFER PHOTOS TO COMPUTER
If your photos are stored on the memory card, then removethe memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader.Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of yourworking computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device oran external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card andcopy the photos to your computer.Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. Youcan copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off yourmemory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing anyprograms.

Computer does not recognize my canon eos rebel xti 400D

You can download the driver aand reinstall it from this link: http://www.nodevice.com/driver/EOS_400D/get37008.html Make sure your existing Canon software, if any, is removed before installing the new driver. If this doesn't work you can always purchase a card reader and extract your photos directly from the memory card.

I've lost the installation CD ROM for my Canon 400D SLR. I now have a new laptop and want to download pictures from my camera to my laptop. My camera has a small problem whereby I can't release my SD from...

What you can actually do is download the Zoombrowser which you can use to transfer the pictures in your camera on to a computer. The link to where to download the software is below. Once you're in the website, just choose your computer's operating system (XP, Vista Windows 7, Mac, etc.) then download the zoombrowser. There are other softwares for your camera on the said site which you might want to download as well.

No date stamp on photos on Canon XTi camera

Most Canons don't seem to be able to embed the date on photos unless the resolution is set to "postcard mode", which is 1600 by something pixels. Set to that resolution, and then try to set the date mark feature (it will be greyed out when the resolution is not set to a compatible mode).

Canon Rebel XTi not recognized when plugged into usb

Vista is your problem. Solution...buy an inexpensive card reader to download your pics to a folder you create on your desktop. From there, you can send the pics to your photo editing software.
