A31 won't boot

My IBM A31 Laptop seems to power up but no screen display. Every now and then it will boot to the logo screen and then freeze up. I checked the ram and ram seems to be good. What should I do next

The problem is that it won't boot at all. Every now and then it will show the IBM LOGO screen but that is it. The fan runs, the lights come on and sounds like everything is working. However, I can't get to the bios to check settings or anything. I have removed cd drive, hd drive, ram and nothing happens. It doesn't even beep when I leave ram out. What should I try next?

I have a similar problem but my machine seems dead. The battery light comes on and it charges but I am not seeing anything. Prior to this I had a operating system not found message. I called IBM support and was told to remove hard drive and memory. After doing this I am not seeing anything.

If your OS is Win XP then UR MBR has gone currupt . You will have to reload the windows or at least repair it.
1. in repair you wont lose the data but in fresh loading of OS in C drive will delete your data in My documents and at desk top.
2. if there is some important data there then first retrive it by making ur drive as slave in other PC and then do the format.

Does not boot and monitor garbled

I believe this is happening cause the ram memory is either damaged or not well inserted in slots.. Open the ram memory compartment and remove them all and insert them back one by one and try to boot up with which one at the time .. This way you will see if any of them is damaged cause will do the same or will not boot at all ..
let me know what you've managed to do ..and how it behaved after checking the ram memory ..

I have an old IBM Thinkpad A31. When I power on, I get the IBM Thinkpad logo on screen, the fan turns on, but after about 15 seconds I get 2 beeps and it shuts down. I suspect that the hard drive is...

Hi,

2 short beeps actually refer to RAM. If you are comfortable re-seating the RAM to it's place, then do it. If you still have the same issue, then it's the motherboard.

A click on YES will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for choosing FixYa!

Tried to power up my eee PC but only grey screen with logo comes. All keys freeze. Tried with and without battery, Tried plugged with power cord and without. Nothing worked.

Please remove the RAM, Hard disk and battery. press the power on button for 1 -2 minites. then insert only one RAM on another slot. Start laptop with AC power. Whether is it displaying the NO BOOT DEVICE or not. If display no boot device, please insert the Hard disk. then try..

Hope this helps to you.
If your problem not solved, please let me know...

Display issues on the IBM A31

it is done to save power from the battery.
what you can do is to click on Function + <up arrow> key and it will increase the light.
also you can check the power setting:
1. right click on your desktop and go to properties
2. go to Screen Saver
3. click on Power
4. check the settings under "Battery"

This is very possibly a hardware problem, namely a crack in the motherboard. Sorry, no easy or cheap fix for it if that's the case.
