Question about Acer Aspire 5050-3242 Notebook
This has been an on going wars with battle after battle lost. To give a short background I've had this laptop for a year and a half - bought it brand new. Got a firewire card to transfer videos. I then bought an external harddrive, a simpletech. When I plugged it froze the entire computer. Unplugging it did no good I'd have to restart. So I contacted Simpletech where it was determined it was a laptop issue b/c the drive works fine on my desktop computer. Contacted acer and they instructed me to install the drivers and if that didn't work contact acer support. Of course they were of NO help b/c I'm out of warranty. In the mean time my internal harddrive crashed with a SMART error. I installed a new HD today and everything is great - plugged in the external HD and it STILL froze. I'm looking for the next step. HEEEELP!!
If the simple tech is still in warranty I would return it to the seller as not compatible with your computer you want to use it on.
otherwise you could reference the acer faq to see if this is a driver issue.
Another possibility is to see if the fire wire card has updated drivers*(I assume that is the port you are using?) and you could also get a fire wire to usb converter. or try changing the connection on the simple tech a slower serial speed, this may be the trade off to use this item.
